Abstract

Systems and methods for fluid control during aspiration. In an embodiment, an aspiration system includes an aspiration line having distal and proximal ends and an aspiration port defined in the distal end; a fluid transport device operatively coupled to the proximal end of the aspiration line; and a flow restrictor operatively coupled to the aspiration line in between the fluid transport device and the aspiration port. To measure occlusion within the line, first and second pressure sensors are utilized, the first sensor being operatively coupled to the aspiration line between the port and the restrictor and the second sensor being operatively coupled to the aspiration line between the restrictor and the fluid transport device. The pressure differential between the two sensors can provide an indication of the onset, presence, and/or elimination of an occlusion.

Claims (18)

1. A method of operating a handpiece, comprising:

placing the handpiece in an operative relationship with an eye for a surgical procedure;

supplying irrigation fluid from an irrigation fluid source to the eye;

applying vacuum from a vacuum-based fluid transport device to the handpiece in order to aspirate the irrigation fluid from the eye through the handpiece;

sensing a pressure difference value between an upstream pressure value measured upstream of a flow restrictor and a downstream pressure value measured downstream of the flow restrictor within a fluid line corresponding to an occlusion of the handpiece;

determining a duration of occlusion; and

restricting fluid flow using the flow restrictor based on the duration of occlusion and the pressure difference value;

wherein the vacuum based fluid transport device is downstream of the flow restrictor.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pressure difference value is at least one of supply irrigation pressure and aspiration vacuum level.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the upstream pressure is sensed using a first vacuum sensor and the downstream pressure is sensed using a second vacuum sensor.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pressure difference value is a pressure differential between the pressure between the flow restrictor and the handpiece and the pressure between the flow restrictor and the vacuum-based fluid transport device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein restricting fluid flow uses a variable flow restrictor.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein restricting fluid flow comprises restricting at least one of supply irrigation pressure, supply irrigation rate, aspiration rate, and aspiration vacuum level.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the restricting fluid flow comprises at least one of lowering a maximum level and raising a minimum level of the fluid flow allowed during the surgical procedure.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an upper value of fluid flow and a lower value of fluid flow, wherein fluid flow is controlled to be less than or equal to the lower value.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising sensing a drop in fluid flow below a lower threshold and, in response to the drop, controlling fluid flow to be less than or equal to the upper value.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an upper value of fluid flow and a lower value of fluid flow, wherein fluid flow is controlled to be greater than or equal to the upper value.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising sensing a rise in fluid flow above an upper threshold and, in response to the rise, controlling fluid flow to be greater than or equal to the lower value.
