Abstract

Systems and methods are described for collecting data at a merchant's point of return for use in processing a merchandise return transaction that is being requested by a customer. In various embodiments, the data may be collected using a wide variety of data collection technologies and may be used in conjunction with stored data, including data collected from other merchants, by a return authorization system to make a determination whether to accept or deny the requested merchandise return. The data may additionally or alternatively be used to determine whether to issue a warning to the customer about limitations on future return transactions presented by the customer. Examples of data categories that may be collected include, but are not limited to, information about: the merchant, the customer, the requested transaction, the merchandise being returned, one or more receipts, a clerk processing the transaction, and other general applicable information.

Claims (17)

1. A method of processing a merchandise return comprising:

collecting shared return information about prior merchandise returns of items being returned by different consumers to different merchants, wherein the shared return information is shared among the different merchants, the shared return information further comprising whether the prior merchandise returns where authorized, and the shared return information further comprising consumer identification information regarding the different consumers associated with the prior merchandise returns;

receiving a request to authorize a current merchandise return made by a consumer at a merchant's point of return;

obtaining from the merchant's point of return, information about the items associated with the current merchandise return;

obtaining from the merchant's point of return, consumer identification information regarding the consumer making the current merchandise return;

accessing the shared return information to identify the prior merchandise returns made by the consumer to other merchants based on the consumer identification information;

determining with one or more computer processors whether to authorize the current merchandise return made by the consumer at the merchant's point of return based at least in part on the items being returned by the consumer, the return information about the prior merchandise returns made by the consumer to the other merchants, and whether the prior merchandise returns to the other merchants were authorized; and

determining with one or more computer processors the acceptability of future merchandise returns by the consumer based at least in part on the information about the return history of the prior merchandise returns.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the consumer identification information comprises a driver's license number.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the consumer identification information comprises an address.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the consumer identification information comprises a customer name.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the consumer identification information comprises a state identification card.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the consumer identification information comprises a government issued identification number.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein indicating whether future merchandise returns will be allowed, comprises presenting a warning to the consumer.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein shared return information further comprises information about the consumer's purchase history.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining whether to authorize the current merchandise return is further based on the information about the consumer's purchase history with the merchant.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining whether to authorize the current merchandise return is further based on the information about the consumer's purchase history with the other merchants.
