Communication with a multi-contact pad having a USB application
View Patent ↗Apparatus for making an electrical connection in a system requiring four electrical connections, including an electrical connection pad having an array of four types of electrically conductive contacts, all conductive contacts of a given type being electrically connected to all other conductive contacts of the same type; and an arrangement for providing electrical connections to conductive contacts on the pads, the arrangement having electrically conductive pins for making contact with the conductive contacts, wherein the types of electrically conductive contacts include two contacts for power and two separate contacts for signals. The pins may be arranged at corners of a first square and a second square, with the first square being rotated by forty-five degrees with respect to the second square, and a pin located at a common center of both squares. A method of operation of the apparatus, and various applications and configurations for its use.
1. A machine-implemented method comprising;
providing an arrangement having electrically conductive pins for making contact with conductive contacts, wherein said pins comprise two pins for power and two separate pins for signals;
determining which of said pins is connected to power and which of said pins is connected to a signal;
providing said arrangement for making electrical connections, comprising electrically conductive contacts arranged at corners of a first square and corners of a second square, said first square being rotated by substantially forty five degrees with respect to said second square, said squares having a common center, and an electrically conductive contact disposed at said common center, and
providing a pad with electrically conductive contacts being sized, shaped and positioned to make electrical contact with selected ones of said electrically conductive contacts of said arrangement.
2. The method of claim of claim 1 , further comprising positioning said arrangement on an outside surface of a portable electronic device.

The method of claim 2 , further comprising positioning said electronic device so that said conductive pins contact conductive contacts of an electrical connection pad to establish electrical connections to said portable electronic device when said portion of said outside surface of said portable electronic device is placed on said pad.
4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising providing circuitry configured to operate with said electrical connection pad so that said electrical connection pad has characteristics of a universal serial bus hub.
5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:
placing said arrangement on an underside surface of a portable computer, to provide temporary electrical connections to said portable computer, and
placing a second said arrangement on a second portable device, said electrical connection pad providing electrical connections between said portable computer and said second arrangement.
6. The method of claim 3 , further comprising providing said electrical connection pad with at least one universal serial bus cable port for connection to a universal serial bus port of a portable electronic device.
7. The method of claim 3 , further comprising configuring said pad with two types of electrically conductive contacts, wherein two contacts are for power and two separate contacts are for signals.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said arrangement is disposed on an outside surface of a portable electronic device, further comprising:
positioning said arrangement so that said conductive pins contact conductive contacts of an electrical connection pad to establish electrical connections to said portable device when said portion of said outside surface of said portable electronic device is placed on said pad.
9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing circuitry for determining which of said electrical contacts of said arrangement is in contact with conductive contacts for electrical power, and which of said electrical contacts of said arrangement is in contact with conductive contacts for signal.
10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
placing said arrangement on an underside surface of a portable electronic device, and
using said arrangement to provide temporary electrical connections to said portable electronic device.
11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising configuring the arrangement to provide electrical connections for apparatus utilizing a standard selected from the group consisting of four pin IEEE 1394, telephone, USB, and Ethernet® RJ45 signal connections.
