Deflection resistant acetabular cup
View Patent ↗An acetabular shell for use in hip arthroplasty. The shell includes a first wall having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a rim. The shell further includes a second wall extending from the outer surface of the first wall. The second wall has an outer surface, an inner surface, and a rim. The rim of the second wall is spaced outwardly from the rim of the first wall.
1. An acetabular shell for use in hip arthroplasty, the shell comprising:
a first wall having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a rim, wherein the rim of the first wall extends continuously around an entire circumference of the outer and inner surfaces; and
a flexible second wall extending from the outer surface of the first wall, the second wall having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a rim, the second wall being provided by a plurality of flanges which are arranged around the first wall, in which adjacent flanges are separated by slits which are cut into the second wall and extend from the rim of the second wall aligned with the longitudinal axis of the shell, wherein the flexible second wall extends around an entire circumference of the outer and inner surfaces, interrupted only by the slits;
wherein the rim of the second wall is spaced outwardly from the rim of the first wall, and wherein the rim of the second wall is separated from the rim of the first wall by a recess, wherein both the rim of the second wall and the rim of the first wall are located opposite an apex near an equator of the cup such that as the acetabular shell is placed in the hip, the flexible second wall is adapted to deflect without the first wall deflecting.
2. The acetabular shell of claim 1 , wherein the inner surface of the first wall includes a locking mechanism for locking a liner to the shell.
3. The acetabular shell of claim 2 , wherein the locking mechanism includes a taper.
4. The acetabular shell of claim 2 , wherein the locking mechanism includes a locking recess.
5. The acetabular shell of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of the first wall is convex.
6. The acetabular shell of claim 5 , wherein the outer surface of the first wall has a first radius and the inner surface of the second wall has a second radius that is greater than the first radius.
7. The acetabular shell of claim 1 , wherein the second wall includes a plurality of outwardly extending flanges.
8. The acetabular shell of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of the first wall is cylindrical.
9. The acetabular shell of claim 1 , wherein the inner surface of the first wall is concave.
10. An acetabular assembly for use in hip arthroplasty, the assembly comprising:
a shell including
a first wall having an outer surface and an inner surface and a rim, the outer surface having a first radius, wherein the rim of the first wall extends continuously around an entire circumference of the outer and inner surfaces, and
a flexible second wall extending from the outer surface of the first wall, the second wall having an outer surface and an inner surface and a rim, the inner surface having a second radius, the second wall being provided by a plurality of flanges which are arranged around the first wall, in which adjacent flanges are separated by slits which are cut into the second wall and extend from the rim of the second wall aligned with the longitudinal axis of the shell, wherein the second radius of the inner surface of the second wall is greater than the first radius of the outer surface of the first wall and wherein the rim of the second wall is separated from the rim of the first wall by a recess, wherein both the rim of the second wall and the rim of the first wall are located opposite an apex near an equator of the cup such that as the acetabular shell is placed in the hip, the flexible second wall is adapted to deflect without the first wall deflecting, wherein the flexible second wall extends around an entire circumference of the outer and inner surfaces, interrupted only by the slits; and
a liner adapted to couple to the inner surface of the first wall.
11. The acetabular system of claim 10 , wherein the second wall includes a plurality of outwardly extending flanges.
12. The acetabular system of claim 10 , wherein the outer surface of the first wall is cylindrical.
13. The acetabular system of claim 10 , wherein the outer surface of the first wall is generally spherical.
14. The acetabular system of claim 10 , wherein the inner surface of the first wall includes a locking mechanism for locking the liner into the shell.
15. The acetabular system of claim 10 , wherein the shell is selected from a plurality of shells and the liner is selected from a plurality of liners.
16. The acetabular system of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of liners includes at least one liner made from a material that is different from at least one other of the plurality of liners.
