Abstract

Methods and devices for providing a virtual keyboard in connection with a multiple screen device are provided. More particularly, information displayed on the screen of a multiple screen device having a current focus of the user is identified, and is presented by a top screen. The virtual keyboard is presented by the bottom screen. The virtual keyboard can be dismissed in response to detecting a change in the focus of the user.

Claims (46)

1 . A method for controlling a display of a virtual keyboard, comprising:

determining a focus of a user of a multiple screen device, wherein the multiple screen device has at least first and second screens, and wherein the focus of the user is determined to be on a window displayed by one of the first and second screens;

presenting the window having the determined focus by the first screen of the multiple screen device;

presenting the virtual keyboard by the second screen of the multiple screen device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that a focus related to information presented by the first and second screens has changed;

in response to determining that the focus has changed, discontinuing the presentation of the virtual keyboard by the second screen of the device.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the first input is received in a gesture capture region, and wherein the gesture capture region is included as part of at least one of the first and second screens of the device.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that a user input mode has been entered, wherein the virtual keyboard is presented in response to determining that the user input mode has been entered.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a first window is presented by the first screen of the multiple screen device, wherein the focus of the user is determined to be on a second window presented by the second screen of the multiple screen device, wherein presenting the virtual keyboard by the second display includes presenting the second window window having the focus of the user by the first screen of the multiple screen device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the focus of the user is determined to be on a first window presented by the first screen of the multiple screen device, wherein presenting the virtual keyboard by the second screen includes discontinuing presenting a second window by the second screen of the multiple screen device.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

determining that a focus related to information presented by the first and second screens has changed;

in response to determining that the focus has changed, discontinuing presenting the virtual keyboard by the second screen of the multiple screen device.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

after discontinuing presenting the virtual keyboard by the second screen of the multiple screen device, presenting the second window by the second screen of the multiple screen device.

9 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

after discontinuing presenting the virtual keyboard by the second screen of the multiple screen device, presenting a third window by the second screen of the multiple screen device.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the third window is one of an extension of the first window and a desktop.

11 . A device, comprising:

a first screen, wherein the first screen includes a first touch sensitive display;

a second screen, wherein the second screen includes a second touch sensitive display;

memory;

a processor;

application programming stored in the memory and executed by the processor, wherein the application programming is operable to:

identify a window having a user focus;

display the window having the user focus on the first touch sensitive display;

display a virtual keyboard on the second touch sensitive display;

detect a change in the user focus;

in response to detecting the change in the user focus, discontinue the display of the virtual keyboard by the second touch sensitive display.

12 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the change in user focus is detected by a touch input received from the user entered on one of the first and second touch sensitive displays.

13 . The device of claim 11 , further comprising:

at least a first gesture capture region, wherein the change in user focus is detected by a touch input received from a user entered on the at least a first gesture capture region.

14 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the window having the user focus is identified by a touch input received from the user on one of the first and second touch sensitive displays.

15 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the touch input is received on the second touch sensitive display, wherein the window displayed by the touch sensitive display is displayed by the first touch screen display after receiving the touch input received on the second touch sensitive display, wherein the virtual keyboard is displayed on the second touch sensitive display after the touch input is received on the second touch sensitive display.

16 . A computer readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions, the computer executable instructions causing a processor to execute a method for controlling a display of a virtual keyboard, the computer-executable instructions comprising:

instructions to determine a focus of a user of a multiple screen device;

instructions to present a window having the focus of the user on a first screen of the multiple screen device;

instructions to present the virtual keyboard on a second screen of the multiple screen device.

17 . The computer readable medium of claim 16 , the computer executable instructions further comprising:

in response to determining that the focus of the user is on a window presented by the second screen of the multiple screen device, instructions to display the window having the focus of the user by the first screen of the multiple screen device.

18 . The computer readable medium of claim 16 , the computer executable instructions further comprising:

instructions to discontinue presenting the virtual keyboard in response to detecting a change in the focus of the user.

19 . The computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the virtual keyboard is presented on the second screen of the multiple screen device in place of a window that does not have the focus of the user.

20 . The computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the multiple screen device includes the computer readable medium.
