Abstract

A stock supply station for use in a insulated glass unit component production line includes a plurality of rotatable sheet stock coils, an indexing mechanism, and an uncoiling mechanism. The indexing mechanism is coupled to the sheet stock coils for indexing a selected one of the sheet stock coils to an uncoiling position. The uncoiling mechanism selectively uncoils sheet stock from a sheet stock coil indexed to the uncoiling position to thereby provide sheet stock to a downstream processing station.

Claims (37)

1. An insulated glass unit spacer production line, comprising:

a) a stock supply station comprising:

i) a plurality of rotatable sheet stock coils wherein each of said coils is mounted to a rotatable disk;

ii) an indexing mechanism coupled to the sheet stock coils for indexing a selected one of the sheet stock coils to an uncoiling position;

iii) a single uncoiling mechanism for selectively uncoiling sheet stock from a selective one of said plurality of sheet stock coils indexed to the uncoiling position by the indexing mechanism, said uncoiling mechanism further comprising a drive wheel for selectively engaging the rotatable disk at the uncoiling position to uncoil sheet stock and a selectively engageable engagement actuator for controllably moving the drive wheel into and out of engagement with the rotatable disk supporting said selected one of the plurality of coils to rotate said selected one of the plurality of coils to thereby provide sheet stock to a downstream processing station;

b) a stamping station that stamps the sheet stock uncoiled from the selected one sheet stock coil;

c) a roll forming station that receives stamped stock and forms rigid linearly extending spacer frame element having opposite side walls and a base wall; and

d) a dispensing station for applying sealant material to external surfaces of the spacer frame element.

2. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 1 wherein the sheet stock coils are individually rotatable about a common axis.

3. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 1 wherein the indexing mechanism comprises a carriage that supports the sheet stock coils and a drive mechanism coupled to the carriage that moves the carriage to selectively position the coils at the uncoiling position.

4. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 1 wherein the drive wheel is positioned to individually drive the selected one of the rotatable sheet stock coils positioned at the uncoiling position to uncoil the sheet stock from the selected one coil.

5. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of clamping mechanisms that position an end portion of each of the sheet stock coils such that the end portion of a coil indexed to the uncoiling station is positioned at an entrance of the processing station.

6. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 1 further comprising a pair of drive rollers positioned at the processing station entrance, the pair of drive rollers being selectively moveable between a first position where the drive rollers are spaced apart and a second position where the drive rollers engage the coil end portion positioned at the entrance of the processing station.

7. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 1 wherein the rotatable sheet stock coils have different width sheet stock and additionally comprising a conveyor for moving spacer frame elements from an exit of the roll forming station and realigning said spacer frame elements to center said elements within an entrance to the dispensing station regardless of the width of the sheet stock from which said elements are formed.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the conveyor includes a scrap removal section wherein a scrap piece exiting the roll forming station is removed from the conveyor prior to the reaching the dispensing station.

9. An insulated glass unit spacer production line, comprising:

a) a stock supply station comprising:

i) a plurality of rotatable sheet stock coils;

ii) a plurality of clamping mechanisms that hold an end portion of each of the sheet stock coils;

iii) an indexing mechanism coupled to the sheet stock coils for indexing a selected sheet stock coil and a corresponding clamping mechanism to an uncoiling position;

iv) a pair of drive rollers being selectively relatively moveable between a spaced apart position and an engagement position for engaging an end portion of a stock coil;

v) a controller in communication with the indexing mechanism and the pair of drive rollers that moves the pair of drive rollers to the spaced apart position, indexes the selected sheet stock coil to the uncoiling position where the corresponding clamping mechanism positions the sheet stock end portion between the pair of drive rollers in the spaced apart position, moves the pair of drive rollers to the engagement position to engage the coil end portion, and rotates the drive rollers to uncoil the sheet stock from the stock coil positioned at the uncoiling position;

b) a stamping station for receiving stock uncoiled by the drive rollers and stamping the sheet stock;

c) a roll forming station that receives stamped stock and forms rigid linearly extending spacer frame element having opposite side walls and a base wall; and

d) a dispensing station for applying sealant material to external surfaces of the spacer frame element.

10. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 9 wherein the rotatable sheet stock coils have different width sheet stock and additionally comprising a conveyor for moving spacer frame elements from an exit of the roll forming station and realigning said spacer frame elements to center said elements within an entrance to the dispensing station regardless of the width of the sheet stock from which said elements are formed.

11. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 9 wherein the indexing mechanism comprises a carriage that supports the sheet stock coils and a drive mechanism coupled to the carriage that moves the carriage to selectively position the coils at the uncoiling position.

12. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 9 further comprising an uncoiling mechanism that is positioned to selectively drive each of the rotatable sheet stock coils when positioned at the uncoiling position to selectively uncoil the sheet stock from each of the coils.

13. The insulated glass unit spacer production line of claim 9 wherein each sheet stock coil is mounted to a rotatable disk and an uncoiling mechanism selectively engages a radially outer surface of the sheet stock coil indexed to the uncoiling position to provide sheet stock to the corresponding clamping mechanism.

14. An insulated glass unit spacer production line, comprising:

a) a stock supply station comprising:

i) a plurality of rotatable sheet stock coils wherein each rotatable sheet stock coil is supported on an associated rotatable disk;

ii) an indexing mechanism coupled to the sheet stock coils for indexing a selected one of the sheet stock coils to an uncoiling position;

iii) a single uncoiling mechanism for selectively uncoiling sheet stock from a selective one of said plurality of sheet stock coils, the selective one of said plurality of sheet stock coils being indexed to the uncoiling position, the single uncoiling mechanism comprising a pivotally mounted engagement actuator pivotable between a disengaged position and an engaged position, wherein in the engaged position the actuator rotates the rotatable disk to unwind sheet stock from the selected one of the sheet stock coils to thereby provide sheet stock to a downstream processing station;

b) a stamping station that stamps the sheet stock unwound from the selective one of said sheet stock coils;

c) a roll forming station that receives stamped stock and forms rigid linearly extending spacer frame element having opposite side walls and a base wall; and

d) a dispensing station for applying sealant material to external surfaces of the spacer frame element.
