Stretch resistant therapeutic device
View Patent ↗A vasoocclusive coil is reinforced with a stretch resistant member to improve safety during retraction of the coil. The stretch resistant member is fixedly attached at one end to the vasoocclusive coil, and the other end of the stretch resistant member is detachably mounted to an elongated pusher member to allow for placement and release of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature.
1. A stretch resistant therapeutic device for release and deployment within a patient's vasculature from an elongated pusher member, comprising:
a vasoocclusive coil having a proximal end and a distal end, said vasoocclusive coil defining a lumen between said proximal and distal ends, and said vasoocclusive coil including a displaced coil segment at the proximal end of the vasoocclusive coil;
a severable member configured to be connected to an elongated pusher member, said severable member forming a loop extending through said displaced coil segment; and
a stretch resistant member extending through said lumen of said vasoocclusive coil, said stretch resistant member having first and second ends, said stretch resistant member being fixedly attached at the first end to said vasoocclusive coil and detachably mounted at the second end to said severable member to allow for placement of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature.
2. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a ribbon.
3. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a wire.
4. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a braid.
5. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a primary wind.
6. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a stranded material.
7. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer.
8. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer selected from the group consisting of an ethylene-octene copolymer, polypropylene, and polyethylene.
9. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed from a metal.
10. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of platinum and nickel titanium alloy.
11. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is radiopaque.
12. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 8 , wherein the vasoocclusive coil is attached to the first end of the stretch resistant member by heating of the end of the fiber.
13. A stretch resistant therapeutic device for release and deployment within a patient's vasculature, comprising:
a vasoocclusive coil having a proximal end and a distal end, said vasoocclusive coil defining a lumen between said proximal and distal ends, and said vasoocclusive coil including a displaced coil segment at the proximal end of the vasoocclusive coil;
an elongated pusher member having a distal end adjacent to said proximal end of said vasoocclusive coil;
a severable member connected to said elongated pusher member, said severable member forming a loop extending through said displaced coil segment to detachably mount said vasoocclusive coil to said elongated pusher member; and
a stretch resistant member extending through said lumen of said vasoocclusive coil, said stretch resistant member having first and second ends, said stretch resistant member being fixedly attached at the first end to said vasoocclusive coil and detachably mounted at the second end to said severable member to allow for placement of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature.
14. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a ribbon.
15. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a wire.
16. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a braid.
17. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a primary wind.
18. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a stranded material.
19. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer.
20. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer selected from the group consisting of an ethylene-octene copolymer, polypropylene, and polyethylene.
21. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed from a metal.
22. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of platinum and nickel titanium alloy.
23. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 13 , wherein said stretch resistant member is radiopaque.
24. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 20 , wherein the vasoocclusive coil is attached to the first end of the stretch resistant member by heating of the end of the fiber.
