Abstract

A vasoocclusive coil is reinforced with a stretch resistant member to improve safety during retraction of the coil. The stretch resistant member is fixedly attached at one end to the vasoocclusive coil, and the other end of the stretch resistant member is detachably mounted to an elongated pusher member to allow for placement and release of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature. The stretch resistant member may be formed from a therapeutic and/or bioactive non-metallic material to enhance the therapeutic properties of the vasoocclusive coil.

Claims (24)

1. A stretch resistant therapeutic device for release and deployment within a patient's vasculature from an elongated pusher member, comprising:

a pusher member connector fiber forming a first loop of fiber configured to be fixedly attached to an elongated pusher member;

a vasoocclusive coil having a proximal end and a distal end, said vasoocclusive coil defining a lumen between said proximal and distal ends, said vasoocclusive coil including a second loop of fiber connected to the proximal end of the coil, wherein said second loop of fiber of said vasoocclusive coil detachably mounts said vasoocclusive coil to the first loop of fiber formed by the pusher member connector fiber; and

a stretch resistant member extending through said lumen of said vasoocclusive coil, said stretch resistant member having first and second ends, said stretch resistant member being fixedly attached at the first end to said vasoocclusive coil, said stretch resistant member including a third loop of fiber connected to the second end of said stretch resistant member, said first loop of fiber extending through said third loop of fiber to detachably mount said stretch resistant member to the pusher member connector fiber to allow for placement of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature.

2. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a primary wind.

3. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a stranded material.

4. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer.

5. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer selected from the group consisting of an ethylene-octene copolymer, polypropylene, and polyethylene.

6. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 5 , wherein the vasoocclusive coil is attached to the first end of the stretch resistant member by heating of the end of the fiber.

7. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said stretch resistant member is radiopaque.

8. The stretch resistant therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein said pusher member connector fiber can be severed by heating of the severable member.

9. An apparatus for release and deployment of a stretch resistant therapeutic device within a patient's vasculature, comprising:

an elongated pusher member including a pusher member connector fiber forming a first loop of fiber fixedly attached to said elongated pusher member;

a vasoocclusive coil having a proximal end and a distal end, said vasoocclusive coil defining a lumen between said proximal and distal ends, said vasoocclusive coil including a second loop of fiber connected to the proximal end of the coil, wherein said second loop of fiber of said vasoocclusive coil detachably mounts said vasoocclusive coil to the first loop of fiber formed by the pusher member connector fiber, said elongated pusher member having a distal end adjacent to said proximal end of said vasoocclusive coil; and

a stretch resistant member extending through said lumen of said vasoocclusive coil, said stretch resistant member being fixedly attached to said vasoocclusive coil, said stretch resistant member including a third loop of fiber connected to said stretch resistant member, said first loop of fiber extending through said third loop of fiber to detachably mount said stretch resistant member to said elongated pusher member to allow for placement of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a primary wind.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a stranded material.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer selected from the group consisting of an ethylene-octene copolymer, polypropylene, and polyethylene.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the stretch resistant member has first and second ends, and the vasoocclusive coil is attached to the first end of the stretch resistant member by heating of the end of the fiber.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said stretch resistant member is radiopaque.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , further means for severing said first loop of fiber disposed adjacent to said first loop of fiber to cause said first loop of fiber to release the vasoocclusive coil for deploying the vasoocclusive coil from the pusher member when a desired placement of the vasoocclusive coil within the vasculature is achieved.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein said means for severing said first loop of fiber comprises an electrical resistance heater wire.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein said first loop of fiber is formed from a thermoplastic material.
