Abstract

According to a disclosed method, an MME in a network analyzes KPIs from the cells it serves and based on the KPIs, it decides to engage in sharing. The MME then contacts a sharing entity (SE) to announce that it wants to borrow or to supply resources. The MME obtains terms of a sharing agreement from the SE and the MME obtains the identity of the other network. In response to this information, the MME configures its network elements to share. The MME's own network may be a supplier or a borrower. If the network is a supplier, the MME configures its base stations to support UEs subscribing to the other network. If the network is a borrower, the MME configures its UEs to accept service from the other network's base stations. The SE applies knowledge of network topology and of services offered. This knowledge is obtained from a sharing database. At the expiration of the sharing agreement, the SE tells the MMEs to deactivate the sharing agreement.

Claims (42)

1. A method performed by a processor connected to a node of a wireless core network that controls at least one radio access network (RAN) and is operated by at least a first operator, comprising:

obtaining at least one key performance indicator (KPI) from one or more cells served by the core network;

deciding to make a sharing attempt based on the at least one KPI, wherein the sharing attempt is an attempt to borrow or to supply cellular resources that affect capacity;

announcing the sharing attempt to a sharing entity (SE) embodied in a processor connected to the wireless core network;

obtaining from the SE the identity of at least one further operator and the terms of a sharing agreement with the at least one further operator;

configuring the RAN to support borrowing of resources from the at least one further operator or supplying of resources to the at least one further operator according to the terms of the sharing agreement;

broadcasting messages from the RAN to a population of mobile terminals for configuring the population to permit roaming between a supplying network and a borrowing network having equal network priorities while the sharing agreement is in force; and

instructing the core network to configure for home tunnel roaming so that the supplying network will provide an air interface for roaming mobile terminals, and via a tunnel, the borrowing network will provide a packet data interface toward external packet networks for the roaming mobile terminals.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the node of the wireless core network is an MME or an RNC.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sharing attempt is an attempt to supply resources, and the configuring the RAN comprises configuring one or more base stations to support mobile terminals that subscribe to the at least one further operator.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sharing attempt is an attempt to borrow resources, and the configuring the RAN comprises instructing at least one mobile terminal that subscribes to the first operator to accept service from base stations operated by the at least one further operator.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a notice from the SE indicating an expiration of the sharing agreement, and upon expiration of the sharing agreement, dismantling the sharing configuration of the RAN.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first operator and the at least one further operator constitute a set of sharing partners, the RAN is configured to permit at least one mobile terminal to roam freely among the sharing partners, and said roaming comprises selecting a serving cell offering a radio channel that is best according to an appropriate figure of merit.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first operator and the at least one further operator constitute a set of sharing partners;

the configuring the RAN comprises transmitting a broadcast message containing update information to at least one mobile terminal;

and the update information includes identities of the sharing partners, so that the at least one mobile terminal will perceive the sharing partners as its own home networks.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deciding to make a sharing attempt is automatically triggered by a change in a loading condition in one of the one or more of cells served by the core network.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the RAN includes one or more sharing eNode-Bs (S-eNBs) which are adapted to implement at least one sharing agreement on a sector-by-sector basis, and the configuring the RAN comprises activating one or more selected sectors of at least one S-eNB to implement a respective sharing agreement.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the configuring the RAN comprises updating one or more OAM parameters and admission control parameters stored at the S-eNB.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the configuring the RAN comprises causing each sector of the S-eNB that has been activated for sharing to broadcast an announcement identifying two or more operators with which it is affiliated, at least one of which is a supplier under the sharing agreement and at least one of which is a borrower under the sharing agreement.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the RAN belongs to a supplying network operator according to the sharing agreement;

the further operator is a borrowing operator according to the sharing agreement; and

the RAN is configured to support roaming, onto the supplying network, of mobile terminals affiliated with the borrowing network.

13. Apparatus comprising:

a processor configured for obtaining at least one key performance indicator (KPI) from one or more cells served by a wireless core network that controls at least one radio access network (RAN) and is operated by at least a first operator;

a processor configured for formulating a sharing attempt based on the at least one KPI, wherein the sharing attempt is an attempt to borrow or to supply cellular resources that affect capacity;

a processor configured for announcing the sharing attempt to a sharing entity (SE) embodied in a processor connected to the wireless core network and for obtaining from the SE an identify of one or more further operators and terms of a sharing agreement with the one or more further operators;

a processor configured for configuring the RAN to support borrowing of resources from the one or more further operators or supplying of resources to the one or more further operators according to the terms of respective sharing agreements;

a processor configured for broadcasting messages from the RAN to a population of mobile terminals for configuring the population to permit roaming between a supplying network and a borrowing network having equal network priorities while the respective sharing agreement is in force; and

a processor configured for instructing the core network to configure for home tunnel roaming so that the supplying network will provide an air interface for roaming mobile terminals, and via a tunnel, the borrowing network will provide a packet data interface toward external packet networks for the roaming mobile terminals.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the apparatus is an MME or an RNC.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the sharing attempt is an attempt to supply resources, and wherein processor configured for configuring the RAN is adapted to configure one or more base stations to support mobile terminals that subscribe to the at least one further operator.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the sharing attempt is an attempt to borrow resources, and wherein processor configured for configuring the RAN is adapted to instruct at least one mobile terminal that subscribes to the first operator to accept service from base stations operated by the at least one further operator.

17. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a processor configured for receiving a notice from the SE indicating an expiration of the sharing agreement, and upon expiration of the sharing agreement, dismantling the sharing configuration of the RAN.

18. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein:

the first operator and the at least one further operator constitute a set of sharing partners;

the processor configured for configuring the RAN is adapted to transmit a broadcast message containing update information to at least one mobile terminal;

and the update information includes identities of the sharing partners, so that the at least one mobile terminal will perceive the sharing partners as its own home networks.
