Abstract

The invention relates to cosmetic and topical compositions containing an effective amount of a photosynthetic cell extract comprising a functional thylakoid system. The cosmetic compositions have anti-wrinkle and anti-aging effects on a user's skin. In addition, the photosynthetic cell extract protects skin against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet (UVB) damage.

Claims (15)

1. A method to provide protection to skin against oxidative damage caused by ultra-violet (UV) radiation comprising applying to the skin an effective amount of a cosmetic composition comprising:

a functional thylakoids-containing photosynthetic cell extract (PCE), wherein the PCE is present in an amount from about 0.01% to about 0.1% based upon total weight of the composition:

an anti-UV effective amount of a sunscreen agent; and

an acceptable carrier.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidative damage includes lipid peroxidation.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidative damage includes erythrocyte haemolysis.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidative damage includes DNA damage.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is formulated for topical application.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the carrier of the composition is selected from the group consisting of fats, hydrophilic or lipophilic gelling agents and fillers.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the extract is non-lyophilized and formulated in a liquid composition.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the extract is a lyophilized extract reconstituted in a solution compatible with topical administration.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the lyophilized extract is in water, physiological saline or propylene glycol.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the lyophilized extract is in a solid composition.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UV radiation is UVA radiation.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UV radiation is UVB radiation.
