Abstract

A nitric oxide delivery system, which includes a gas bottle having nitrogen dioxide in air, converts nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide and employs a surface-active material, such as silica gel, coated with an aqueous solution of antioxidant, such as ascorbic acid. A nitric oxide delivery system may be used to generate therapeutic gas including nitric oxide for use in delivering the therapeutic gas to a mammal.

Claims (13)

1. A method for making a device for converting nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide comprising:

coating a surface-active material with a reducing agent to form a composition; and

filling at least a chamber of a conversion cartridge with the composition, wherein the conversion cartridge includes an inlet, the chamber and an outlet.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing agent is an antioxidant.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surface-active material comprises a substrate that retains water.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the antioxidant comprises ascorbic acid, alpha tocopherol or gamma tocopherol.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein filling at least a portion of the receptacle includes filling the chamber.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the method further includes coating a second surface-active material with a second reducing agent to form a second composition and filling the inlet or the outlet with the second composition.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first reducing agent and the second reducing agent are both antioxidants.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first reducing agent and the second reducing agent are the same reducing agent.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein filling at least a portion of the receptacle with the composition includes packing at least a portion of the receptacle with the composition.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein coating a surface-active material with a reducing agent to form a composition includes soaking the surface-active material in a solution including the reducing agent.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein coating a surface-active material with a reducing agent to form a composition further includes drying the surface-active material soaked with a solution including the reducing agent.
