Abstract

A method provides for assembling a wind turbine blade from at least two blade segments, with each of the blade segments having a pressure side shell member, a suction side shell member, internal support structure, and ends with joint sections that are offset span-wise from the pressure side shell member to the suction side shell member. The blade segments are aligned in an end-to-end orientation and moved into a mating configuration with relative movement that includes overlapping the respective joint sections of adjacent blade segments. The overlapped joint sections are subsequently moved into engagement with each other and joined along respective joint profiles at a chord-wise joint.

Claims (21)

1. A method for assembling a wind turbine blade from at least two blade segments, wherein each of the blade segments has a pressure side shell member, a suction side shell member, internal support structure, and span-wise ends with a respective joint section, the method comprising:

aligning the blade segments in an end-to-end orientation with one blade segment above the other respective blade segment such that the joint sections are spaced vertically apart transverse to a span-wise direction, the joint sections having a joint profile that is offset in a single span-wise direction from the pressure side shell member to the suction side shell member;

moving the joint sections into a mating configuration with relative movement that includes overlapping the respective joint sections of adjacent blade segments and subsequently vertically moving the overlapped joint sections transverse to the span-wise direction into engagement with each other; and

joining the joint sections along the respective joint profiles at a chord-wise joint such that the joint profiles overlie each other in a span-wise direction.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the joint sections are moved into a mating configuration by maintaining one of the blade segments stationary while lowering the other respective blade segment onto the stationary blade segment such that the overlapping joint sections engage.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the lowering movement includes an axial movement component to bring the joint sections into an overlapping orientation prior to engagement of the joint sections.

4. The method of claim 1 , comprising joining the respective joint sections along at least one joint line that is generally parallel to the pressure side shell member or suction side shell member in a span-wise direction.

5. The method of claim 4 , comprising joining the respective joint sections along a plurality of the parallel joint lines.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the internal support structure includes spar caps along the pressure and suction side shell members, the method further comprising joining the joint sections at parallel joint lines that include an exposed section of one of the spar caps that extends span-wise beyond its respective shell member, and a section of the opposite one of the suction or pressure side shell member that extends span-wise beyond its respective spar cap.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising joining the joint sections along at least one section of the respective joint profiles that is also offset chord-wise from a leading edge to a trailing edge of the blade segments.

8. The method of claim 7 , comprising joining the joint sections along edges of the pressure and suction side shell members that are offset chord-wise.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the internal support structure includes spar caps along the pressure and suction side shell members, the method further comprising joining the joint sections along edges of the spar caps that are offset chord-wise.

10. A method for assembling a wind turbine blade from at least two blade segments, wherein each of the blade segments has a pressure side shell member a suction side shell member, internal support structure, and span-wise ends with a respective joint section, the method comprising:

aligning the blade segments in an end-to-end orientation with one blade segment above the other respective blade segment such that the joint sections are spaced vertically apart, the joint sections having joint profile that is offset in a single span-wise direction from the pressure side shell member to the suction side shell member;

moving the joint sections into a mating configuration with relative movement that includes overlapping the respective joint sections of adjacent blade segments and subsequently vertically moving the overlapped joint sections into engagement with each other;

joining the joint sections along the respective joint profiles at a chord-wise joint such that the joint profiles overlie each other in a span-wise direction;

wherein the internal support structure includes spar caps along the pressure and suction side shell members, the method further comprising joining the joint sections at a plurality of parallel joint lines that include an exposed section of one of the spar caps that extends span-wise beyond its respective shell member, and a section of the opposite one of the suction or pressure side shell member that extends span-wise beyond it respective spar cap; and

wherein the internal support structure includes a shear web that spans between the spar caps, the method further comprising joining the joint sections at parallel joint lines that include an exposed section of the shear web that extends span-wise beyond a respective spar cap at one of the pressure or suction side shell members, and a section of the opposite spar cap that extends span-wise beyond the shear web at the opposite one of the suction or pressure side shell member.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising joining the joint sections along an angled face of the shear web that extends span-wise from one spar cap to the opposite spar cap in the joint section.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising joining the joint sections along a parallel joint line that includes an exposed section of the shear webs that extend span-wise within the joint section.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising joining the joint sections along an exposed generally vertical face of the shear webs within the joint section.
