Abstract

Embodiments are directed to portable infusion devices, systems, and methods of using the same for dispensing materials. In some cases, the devices, systems and methods may be used for infusing a material such as medicament, e.g., insulin, into a body in need thereof.

Claims (42)

1 . A system for facilitating user error prevention in a portable infusion device, comprising:

a touch sensitive display configured for displaying at least one display object such that user interaction with the display generates a user input value;

a processor functionally linked to the display and configured for receiving the user input value; and

processor instructions, accessible by the processor, configured to instruct the processor to:

display a plurality of objects on the touch sensitive display, the plurality of objects including at least two objects, each of which represents a different user input value;

receive a user selection of one displayed object, the user selection corresponding to a represented user input value; and

ignore the received user selection if the represented user input value is not an acceptable value for operation of the portable infusion device to prevent the user from selecting a value that is too large or too small based on known information, and otherwise accept the received user selection as a user input value for operation of the portable infusion device.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor instructions are further configured to instruct the processor to display at least one object as a deactivated object such that the deactivated object is displayed as visually distinct from at least one object that is not a deactivated object, wherein a deactivated object corresponds to a represented user input value that is not an acceptable value for operation of the portable infusion device.

3 . The system of claim 2 wherein the processor instructions are further configured to display the at least one deactivated object with a different illumination than an illumination of an object that is not deactivated.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein any one of the objects displayed on the user-interactive touch screen display represent at least one of a number and symbol.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein any one of the objects displayed on the user-interactive touch screen display represent at least one of a number, letter, symbol, pictogram, and graph.

6 . The system of claim 1 wherein the processor instructions are configured to instruct the processor to change the acceptable objects displayed to correspond to a previous acceptable user entry.

7 . A method of facilitating user error prevention in a portable infusion device, the method comprising:

displaying a plurality of objects on a touch sensitive display of the portable infusion device, the plurality of objects including at least two objects, each of which represents a different user input value;

receiving a user selection of one displayed object on the touch sensitive display, the user selection corresponding to a represented user input value;

ignoring the received user selection if the represented user input value is not an acceptable value for operation of the portable infusion device to prevent the user from selecting a value that is too large or too small based on known information, and otherwise accepting the received user selection as a user input value for operation of the portable infusion device.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein displaying the plurality of objects further comprises displaying at least one object as a deactivated object such that the deactivated object is displayed as visually distinct from at least one object that is not a deactivated object, wherein a deactivated object corresponds to a represented user input value that is not an acceptable value for operation of the portable infusion device.

9 . The method of claim 8 wherein displaying at least one deactivated object as visually distinct from at least one object that is not deactivated comprises displaying the at least one deactivated object with a different illumination than an illumination of the at least one object that is not deactivated.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein any one of the objects displayed on the touch sensitive display represent at least one of a number, letter, symbol, pictogram, and graph.

11 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising displaying objects on the user-interactive touch sensitive display that represent at least one of a number and symbol.

12 . The method of claim 7 further comprising changing the acceptable objects displayed to correspond to a previous user entry representing an acceptable user entry.

13 . A system for facilitating user error prevention in a portable infusion device, comprising:

(a) a touch sensitive display configured for displaying at least one display object such that user interaction with the display generates a user input entry;

(b) a processor functionally linked to the display and configured for receiving the user input entry; and

(c) processor instructions, accessible by the processor, configured to instruct the processor to:

(i) display a virtual keypad including a plurality of objects on the touch sensitive display, the plurality of objects including at least two objects, each of which represents a different user input entry;

(ii) receive a user selection of one displayed object on the virtual keypad, the user selection corresponding to a represented user input entry for an amount of insulin to be delivered to the user; and

(iii) ignore the received user selection if the represented user input entry is not an acceptable entry corresponding to an acceptable value of an amount of insulin to be delivered, and otherwise accept the received user selection as a user input entry corresponding to an acceptable value of an amount of insulin to be delivered.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor instructions are further configured to instruct the processor to display at least one object as a deactivated object such that the deactivated object is displayed as visually distinct from at least one object that is not a deactivated object, wherein a deactivated object corresponds to a represented user input entry that does not correspond to an acceptable value for an amount of insulin to be delivered.

15 . The system of claim 14 wherein the processor instructions are further configured to display the at least one deactivated object with a different illumination than an illumination of an object that is not deactivated.

16 . The system of claim 13 , wherein any one of the objects displayed on the user-interactive touch screen display represent at least one of a number and symbol.

17 . The system of claim 13 , wherein any one of the objects displayed on the user-interactive touch screen display represent at least one of a number, letter, symbol, pictogram, and graph.

18 . The system of claim 13 wherein the processor instructions are configured to instruct the processor to change the acceptable objects displayed to correspond to a previous acceptable user entry.

19 . A method for facilitating user error prevention in a portable infusion device, comprising:

(i) displaying a virtual keypad including a plurality of objects on a touch sensitive display of the portable infusion device, the plurality of objects including at least two objects, each of which represents a different user input entry;

(ii) receiving a user selection of one displayed object on the virtual keypad, the user selection corresponding to a represented user input entry for an amount of insulin to be delivered to the user; and

(iii) ignoring the received user selection if the represented user input entry is not an acceptable entry corresponding to an acceptable value of an amount of insulin to be delivered, and otherwise accepting the received user selection as a user input entry corresponding to an acceptable value of an amount of insulin to be delivered.

20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising displaying at least one object as a deactivated object such that the deactivated object is displayed as visually distinct from at least one object that is not a deactivated object, and wherein a deactivated object corresponds to a represented user input entry that does not correspond to an acceptable value for an amount of insulin to be delivered.

21 . The method of claim 20 wherein displaying at least one deactivated object as visually distinct from at least one object that is not deactivated comprises displaying the at least one deactivated object with a different illumination than an illumination of the at least one object that is not deactivated.

22 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising displaying objects on the user-interactive touch sensitive display that represent at least one of a number and symbol.

23 . The method of claim 19 , wherein any one of the objects displayed on the touch sensitive display represent at least one of a number, letter, symbol, pictogram, and graph.

24 . The method of claim 19 further comprising changing the acceptable objects displayed to correspond to a previous user entry representing an acceptable amount of insulin to be delivered.
