Abstract

A surgical instrument comprising a handle assembly, a body, a tool assembly and an articulation assembly is disclosed. The articulation mechanism includes a receptacle, and a main shaft. A lower clutch is fixedly positioned within the receptacle and has a serrated portion including a plurality of serrations. An upper clutch includes at least one projection positioned to engage the serrations of the lower clutch to releasably retain the main shaft at a rotatably fixed position. An angle between a first pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a first angle, an angle between a second pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a second angle, and an angle between a third pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a third angle. The first angle, the second angle, and the third angle are each different from one another.

Claims (20)

1. A surgical instrument comprising:

an articulation mechanism including an upper portion and a lower portion, the lower portion including a plurality of serrations and being positioned in juxtaposed relation with the upper portion, the upper portion including at least one projection positioned to engage the serrations of the lower portion;

wherein an angle between a first pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a first angle, an angle between a second pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a second angle, and an angle between a third pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a third angle, and wherein each of the first angle, the second angle, and the third angle are different from one another.

2. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the first angle is between about 25° and about 35°.

3. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the second angle is between about 5° and about 15°.

4. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the third angle is between about 15° and about 25°.

5. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the first angle is disposed between a first serration and an adjacent second serration and is between about 25° and about 35°, and wherein the second angle is disposed between the second serration and an adjacent third serration and is between about 5° and about 15°.

6. The surgical instrument according to claim 5 , wherein the second angle is also disposed between the third serration and an adjacent fourth serration.

7. The surgical instrument according to claim 6 , wherein the third angle is disposed between the fourth serration and an adjacent fifth serration and is between about 15° and about 25°.

8. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the serrations are symmetrically disposed about two axes of the lower portion.

9. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the upper portion includes exactly two projections.

10. An articulation mechanism for affecting movement of a tool assembly of a surgical instrument between a non-articulated position and at least one articulated position, the articulation mechanism comprising:

a lower portion including a plurality of serrations; and

an upper portion disposed in juxtaposed relation with the lower portion, the upper portion including at least one projection positioned to engage the serrations of the lower portion;

wherein an angle between a first pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a first angle, an angle between a second pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a second angle, and an angle between a third pair of adjacent serrations is defined as a third angle, and wherein each of the first angle, the second angle, and the third angle are different from one another.

11. The articulation mechanism according to claim 10 , wherein the first angle is between about 25° and about 35°.

12. The articulation mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the second angle is between about 5° and about 15°.

13. The articulation mechanism according to claim 12 , wherein the third angle is between about 15° and about 25°.

14. The articulation mechanism according to claim 10 , wherein the first angle is disposed between a first serration and an adjacent second serration and is between about 25° and about 35°, and wherein the second angle is disposed between the second serration and an adjacent third serration and is between about 5° and about 15°.

15. The articulation mechanism according to claim 14 , wherein a fourth serration is disposed adjacent the third serration, and wherein the third angle is disposed between the fourth serration and an adjacent fifth serration and is between about 15° and about 25°.
