Prosthetic Heart Valves, Support Structures and Systems and Methods for Implanting the Same
Prosthetic valves and their component parts are described, as are prosthetic valve delivery devices and methods for their use. The prosthetic valves are particularly adapted for use in percutaneous aortic valve replacement procedures. The delivery devices are particularly adapted for use in minimally invasive surgical procedures.
1 . A medical device, comprising:
a support structure expandable from a contracted state to an expanded state, the support structure being configured for implantation within a fluid-carrying lumen of a subject;
a valvular body located within the support structure; and
a sealing member located on the support structure, the sealing member being configured to at least partially seal the region between the support structure and the fluid-carrying lumen, wherein the sealing member comprises a flexible outer membrane and a plurality of compressible members located within the membrane, each of the compressible members being biased to extend to an extended state and being compressible to allow the sealing member to conform to underlying tissue.
2 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein, in the expanded state, the support structure is generally cylindrical and the sealing member is a ring.
3 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein each compressible member is a compressible flap-like member.
4 . The medical device of claim 3 , wherein each flap-like member is curved when in the extended state.
5 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein each compressible member is a coil-like member.
6 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein each compressible member is a coiled portion of a continuous coil.
7 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the sealing member is located around the entire perimeter of the support structure.
8 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of compressible members are shape retensive.
9 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the sealing member is a conformable ring and wherein multiple conformable rings are located on the support structure.
10 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the sealing member is a conformable ring and covers the majority of an exterior surface of the support structure between a proximal end and a distal end of the support structure.
11 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of compressible members are coupled with the outer membrane.
12 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of compressible members are not couple with the outer membrane and are freely disposed within the outer membrane.
