Abstract

A system for fixing a wire to a surface of an external fixator having a wire adapted to extend through bony structure fastened with respect to the surface. A bolt having a shaft which comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element is provided wherein the bolt is adapted to extend through an opening in the external fixation element with a nut, and clamps the wire to the surface. A counter torque tool is used to provide a counter torque while fastening the wire with the bolt and the nut. The bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein the counter torque tool comprises a section which is adapted to engage into the counter torque opening of the bolt to apply the counter torque.

Claims (82)

1. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixator element, said system comprising:

an external fixator element having a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening, wherein said counter torque tool comprises at least one opening through which a part of said wire extends.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the counter torque tool comprises a handle.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one clamping element is arranged closer to said surface than the counter-torque opening.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said counter torque opening extends along a middle axis which extends at an angle to the axis of the bolt.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said counter torque opening extends along a middle axis which extends perpendicular to the axis of the bolt.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said counter torque opening is provided as a through opening, whereby the head section encompasses the opening.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said counter torque opening has a circular or a polygonal or a rectangular cross section.

8. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixator element, said system comprising:

an external fixator element having a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening and wherein the system further comprises a wire tensioning tool and wherein the counter torque tool comprises a connection section via which said counter torque tool is connectable to a wire tensioning tool.

9. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the connection section is a threaded structure.

10. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the at least one clamping element is arranged closer to said surface than the counter-torque opening.

11. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixator element, said system comprising:

an external fixator element having a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque opening is provided as a blind opening, whereby the head section encompasses the opening.

12. The system according to claim 11 , wherein the at least one clamping element is arranged closer to said surface than the counter-torque opening.

13. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixator element, said system comprising:

an external fixator element having a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening and wherein the clamping element is a clamping opening or a clamping channel and wherein the clamping elements are between the counter torque opening and the clamping surface of the external fixator.

14. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixator element, said system comprising:

an external fixator element having a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening and wherein the clamping element is a clamping opening or a clamping channel both of which extend parallel to the counter torque opening and wherein the clamping element is between the counter torque opening and the clamping surface of the external fixator.

15. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixator element, said system comprising:

an external fixator element having a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening and wherein the clamping channel is provided with a cut-out that extends along the clamping channel so that a wire is insertable through said clamping channel.

16. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixator element, said system comprising:

an external fixator element having a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening wherein the clamping opening or the clamping channel comprises a structure which enhances friction between wire and opening or the channel, respectively.

17. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixator element, said system comprising:

an external fixator element having a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening and wherein the head section extends, as viewed in direction of the clamping opening, over the actual length of the clamping opening such that at least on one side of said opening a projection is provided via which said wire is clamped.

18. A method for tensioning a wire of an external fixator, said method comprising

obtaining an external fixator element comprising a clamping surface and at least one opening extending from said surface,

a wire adapted to extend through bony structure and to be fastened to said surface,

a bolt having a shaft extending along an axis which shaft comprises a threaded section, a head section and at least one clamping element wherein said bolt is adapted to extend through said external fixator element opening and said at least one clamping element accommodates and clamps the wire to said clamping surface with a clamping force,

a nut to pull said bolt against said clamping surface the external fixator element with said clamping force, and

a counter torque tool engagable with the bolt to provide a counter torque while fastening said wire with said bolt and said nut to said surface, wherein

said bolt comprises a counter torque opening and wherein said counter torque tool comprises a bolt section which is adapted to engage into said counter torque opening of said bolt, and wherein said counter torque tool bolt section has a cross-section which is complementary to said counter torque opening;

fixing the wire with the bolt and nut to the surface of the external fixation element whereby said counter torque tool is used to provide a counter torque against the tightening force tightening the nut;

tensioning the wire by means of a wire fixator which is equipped with a counter torque tool to provide a counter torque against the tightening force to tighten the nut; and

tightening the nut by means of a wrench, whereby a counter torque is provided by means of said counter torque tool.

19. A system for fixing a wire to an external fixation element comprising:

an external fixation element having at least one opening extending through the element, the element having an upper and lower surface;

a wire for insertion into a bone and having a portion adapted to be clamped on the upper or lower surface;

a bolt having a threaded shaft extending along an axis extending through the opening in the external fixator element and having a clamping surface for receiving the wire portion adapted to be clamped to the external fixator element upper or lower surface, the bolt including a surface for engaging a tool for preventing rotation of the bolt around its axis;

a nut mounted on the threaded shaft for operatively engaging the one of the upper or lower surfaces not engaging the wire for applying a clamping force on the wire; and

a wire tensioner for gripping an end portion of the wire, the wire tensioner including a tool engagable with the surface on the bolt to prevent rotation of the bolt while the wire tensioner is gripping the end portion of the wire.

20. The system as set forth in claim 19 wherein the surface for preventing rotation of the bolt is a cylindrical bore in a portion of the bolt.
