Abstract

In a mobile communication device, a method for determining the existence of one or more pending messages, the method including exiting from a power-save mode of operation, in which the mobile communication device does not receive messages; selecting for communication, one of a plurality of communication paths, the selecting based on at least one of a plurality of conditions associated with the one of the plurality of communication paths; and attempting to communicate over the one of the plurality of communication paths to check for pending messages. The plurality of communication paths includes at least a first and a second communication path. The attempting to communicate over the one of the plurality of communication paths includes attempting to communicate over the first communication path to check for the pending messages by communicating with a message server over the first communication path.

Claims (42)

1. In a mobile communication device, a method for determining the existence of one or more pending messages, the method comprising:

exiting from a power-save mode of operation, in which the mobile communication device does not receive messages;

selecting for communication, one of a plurality of communication paths, said selecting based on at least one of a plurality of conditions associated with said one of said plurality of communication paths; and

attempting to communicate over said one of said plurality of communication paths to check for pending messages, wherein said plurality of communication paths comprises at least a first and a second communication path.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said attempting to communicate over said one of said plurality of communication paths comprises:

attempting to communicate over the first communication path to check for said pending messages by communicating with a message server over the first communication path; and

if said attempting to communicate over the first communication path fails, then attempting to communicate over the second communication path to check for pending messages by communicating with the message server over the second communication path.

3. The method of claim 1 , comprising determining the availability of said one of said plurality of communication paths by at least one of:

receiving a beacon signal transmitted from an access point of the first communication path; and

transmitting a beacon signal that is to be received by the access point of the first communication path.

4. The method of claim 1 , comprising determining to attempt to communicate over the first communication path to check for the pending messages prior to attempting to communicate over the second communication path to check for the pending messages.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said determining to attempt to communicate over the first communication path to check for the pending messages prior to attempting to communicate over the second communication path to check for the pending messages comprises determining that communicating over the first communication path consumes less electrical energy than communicating over the second communication path.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein said determining to attempt to communicate over the first communication path to check for the pending messages prior to attempting to communicate over the second communication path to check for the pending messages comprises determining that communicating over the first communication path is higher priority than communicating over the second communication path.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second communication path comprises at least a portion of the first communication path.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first communication path comprises a telecommunication network, and the second communication path comprises a computer network.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first communication path comprises one or both of: a personal area network (PAN) and/or a local area network (LAN).

10. The method of claim 1 , comprising periodically exiting from the power-save mode of operation to check for the pending messages.

11. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

after checking for the pending messages, re-entering the power-save mode of operation.

12. The method of claim 11 , comprising:

after the checking for the pending messages and prior to the re-entering of the power-save mode of operation, performing at least one function unrelated to the pending messages.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said at least one function unrelated to the pending messages comprises one or more of: making a phone call, listening to music, composing a message, sending an email, and/or viewing a video.

14. A system for determining the existence of one or more pending messages, the system comprising:

one or more circuits for use in a mobile communication device, said one or more circuits being operable to exit from a power-save mode of operation, in which the mobile communication device does not receive messages;

said one or more circuits being operable to select for communication, one of a plurality of communication paths, said selecting based on at least one of a plurality of conditions associated with said one of said plurality of communication paths; and

said one or more circuits being operable to attempt to communicate over said one of said plurality of communication paths to check for pending messages, wherein said plurality of communication paths comprises at least a first and a second communication path.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to:

attempt to communicate over the first communication path to check for said pending messages by communicating with a message server over the first communication path; and

if said attempting to communicate over the first communication path fails, then attempt to communicate over the second communication path to check for pending messages by communicating with the message server over the second communication path.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to determine the availability of said one of said plurality of communication paths by at least one of:

receive a beacon signal transmitted from an access point of the first communication path; and

transmit a beacon signal that is to be received by the access point of the first communication path.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to determine to attempt to communicate over the first communication path to check for the pending messages prior to attempting to communicate over the second communication path to check for the pending messages.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to determine that communicating over the first communication path consumes less electrical energy than communicating over the second communication path, during said determining to attempt to communicate over the first communication path to check for the pending messages prior to attempting to communicate over the second communication path.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to determine that communicating over the first communication path is higher priority than communicating over the second communication path, during said determining to attempt to communicate over the first communication path to check for the pending messages prior to attempting to communicate over the second communication path.

20. The system of claim 14 , wherein the second communication path comprises at least a portion of the first communication path.

21. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first communication path comprises a telecommunication network, and the second communication path comprises a computer network.

22. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first communication path comprises one or both of: a personal area network (PAN) and/or a local area network (LAN).

23. The system of claim 14 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to periodically exit from the power-save mode of operation to check for the pending messages.

24. The system of claim 23 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to, after checking for the pending messages, re-enter the power-save mode of operation.

25. The system of claim 24 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to, after the checking for the pending messages and prior to the re-entering of the power-save mode of operation, perform at least one function unrelated to the pending messages.

26. The system of claim 25 , wherein said at least one function unrelated to the pending messages comprises one or more of: making a phone call, listening to music, composing a message, sending an email, and/or viewing a video.
