receiving on a portable fitness device from a shoe having an RFID tag information relating to the shoe, wherein the shoe is for wearing during the fitness activity;

receiving on the portable fitness device information about the fitness activity; and

generating an output to the user based on the information relating to the shoe and the information about the fitness activity.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information relating to the shoe comprises an identification of the shoe.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the output comprises mileage information for the shoe.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the output comprises a total lifetime mileage for the shoe.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the output comprises information about the user's performance during the fitness activity.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the output comprises a distance traveled during the fitness activity.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the output comprises GPS location information.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fitness activity comprises a traversal of a route and the output comprises route information.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information relating to the shoe is received before the user begins the fitness activity.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information relating to the shoe is received while the user is engaged in the fitness activity.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information relating to the shoe is received after the user has completed the fitness activity.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the output is generated after the user has completed the fitness activity.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the output is generated on the portable fitness device.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the output is generated on a remote computer.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the output comprises an identification of the shoe.

17. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer useable medium having computer program logic stored therein for causing one or more processors of a portable fitness device to provide information to a user about a fitness activity, the computer program logic comprising:

first computer readable program code for causing the one or more processors to receive on a portable fitness device from a shoe having an RFID tag information relating to the shoe, wherein the shoe is for wearing during the fitness activity;

second computer readable program code for causing the one or more processors to receive on the portable fitness device information about the fitness activity; and

third computer readable program code for causing the one or more processors to generate and output to the user based on the information relating to the shoe and the information about the fitness activity.

18. A method for providing information to a user about a fitness activity, comprising:

receiving on a portable fitness device from a shoe having an RFID tag information relating to the shoe, wherein the shoe is for wearing during the fitness activity;

receiving on the portable fitness device information about the fitness activity; and

outputting to the user on the portable fitness device mileage information for the shoe.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the mileage information for the shoe comprises a total lifetime mileage for the shoe.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the fitness activity comprises a traversal of a route.

21. The method of claim 20 , further comprising outputting to the user on the portable fitness device route information.

22. The method of claim 18 , further comprising outputting to the user on the portable fitness device an identification of the shoe.

23. A method for providing information to a user about a fitness activity, comprising:

receiving on a portable fitness device from a shoe having an RFID tag information relating to the shoe, wherein the shoe is for wearing during the fitness activity;

receiving on the portable fitness device information about the fitness activity; and

outputting to the user the information relating to the shoe, the information about the fitness activity, and a total lifetime mileage for the shoe.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein the fitness activity comprises a traversal of a route and the information about the fitness activity comprises route information.

25. The method of claim 23 , wherein the information relating to the shoe comprises an identification of the shoe.

26. The method of claim 23 , wherein the information relating to the shoe, the information about the fitness activity, and the total lifetime mileage for the shoe are outputted after the user has completed the fitness activity.
