Abstract

The disclosure relates generally to embodiments of systems and methods of spinal stabilization. Embodiments include methods that use a dilator to displace tissue proximate to a sleeve. An embodiment of a surgical system can comprise a dilator that may define a working channel from a first opening to a second opening. The dilator can be positioned to displace tissue proximate to the sleeve. The dilator may be shaped to allow a first end of an elongated member to enter the working channel through the first opening and exit the dilator through the second opening to be percutaneously moved to another assembly.

Claims (36)

1. A spinal stabilization system comprising:

a first assembly comprising:

a bone fastener;

a collar coupled to the bone fastener, said collar comprising a slot for seating an elongated member; and

a sleeve removably coupled to the collar; and

a dilator defining a working channel from a first opening to a second opening, the dilator configured to displace tissue proximate to the sleeve, wherein the dilator is shaped to allow a first end of the elongated member to enter the working channel through the first opening and exit the dilator through the second opening to be percutaneously moved from the first assembly to another assembly, wherein the dilator comprises a first wall approximately parallel to the sleeve and a second wall opposing the first wall, the second wall angled away from the sleeve;

wherein the sleeve is configured to be coupled to the collar in the absence of the dilator.

2. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , wherein the dilator further comprises a sleeve receiving section shaped to receive the sleeve and form a frictional fit with the sleeve.

3. The spinal stabilization system of claim 2 , wherein the sleeve receiving section has an approximately constant cross section.

4. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , wherein the angle is between approximately 30-45 degrees.

5. The spinal stabilization system of claim 4 , wherein the second opening comprises a section approximately parallel to the first opening.

6. The spinal stabilization system of claim 5 , wherein the dilator is shaped such that when the bone fastener is coupled to a vertebra, the first opening is exterior to a patient during use and the second opening is proximate to the collar.

7. The spinal stabilization system of claim 5 , wherein the second opening comprises a second section approximately perpendicular to the first opening.

8. The spinal stabilization system of claim 7 , wherein the second section of the second opening is positioned to at least partially overlap with an opening in a first assembly to allow the elongated member to enter the first assembly from the working channel.

9. The spinal stabilization system of claim 8 , wherein the second opening comprises a third section perpendicular to the first opening to allow the elongated member to overhang the collar.

10. The spinal stabilization system of claim 4 , wherein the first opening has a smaller radius of curvature proximate to the first wall than the second wall.

11. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , wherein the second opening is positioned to at least partially overlap with an opening in the first assembly so that the elongated member can enter the first assembly from the working channel.

12. A spinal stabilization system comprising:

a first assembly comprising:

a first bone fastener;

a first collar coupled to the first bone fastener; and

a first sleeve removably coupled to the first collar; and

a dilator configured to be placed over the first sleeve after the first sleeve is coupled to the first collar, the dilator configured to displace tissue proximate to the first sleeve when positioned over the first sleeve, the dilator comprising a first opening having a first inner diameter, a second opening having a second inner diameter that is different than the first inner diameter, and a working channel running from the first opening to the second opening, the dilator configured to allow a first portion of an elongated member to be moved through the working channel to a second assembly.

13. The spinal stabilization system of claim 12 , further comprising a second assembly, the second assembly comprising a second bone fastener, a second collar coupled to the second bone fastener, and a second sleeve removably coupled to the second collar.

14. The spinal stabilization system of claim 12 , wherein the first inner diameter is larger than the second inner diameter.

15. The spinal stabilization system of claim 12 , wherein the dilator is configured such that when positioned over the first sleeve, a majority of the tissue displaced is on one side of the first sleeve.

16. The spinal stabilization system of claim 12 , wherein the dilator comprises a first wall approximately parallel to the first sleeve, and a second wall at an angle relative to the first wall, wherein the first wall and the second wall at least partially define the working channel.

17. The spinal stabilization system of claim 12 , wherein the dilator further comprises a first sleeve receiving section shaped to receive the first sleeve and form a frictional fit with the first sleeve.

18. A spinal stabilization system comprising:

a first assembly comprising:

a first bone fastener;

a first collar coupled to the first bone fastener; and

a first sleeve removably coupled to the first collar; and

a dilator configured to be placed over the first sleeve after the first sleeve is coupled to the first collar, the dilator configured to displace tissue proximate to the first sleeve when positioned over the first sleeve, the dilator comprising a first opening having a first diameter, a second opening having a second diameter that is different than the first diameter, and a working channel running from the first opening to the second opening, the second opening having a section approximately perpendicular to the first opening, the dilator comprising a first wall approximately parallel to the first sleeve, and a second wall at an angle relative to the first wall, wherein the first wall and the second wall at least partially define the working channel, the first opening having a smaller interior radius of curvature proximate to the first wall than the second wall, the dilator configured to allow a first portion of an elongated member to be moved through the working channel to a second assembly.

19. The spinal stabilization system of claim 18 , wherein the second wall is at an angle of approximately 30-45 degrees from the first wall.

20. The spinal stabilization system of claim 18 , wherein the dilator further comprises a first sleeve receiving section shaped to receive the first sleeve and form a frictional fit with the first sleeve.
