Abstract

A liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal display panel having a first substrate, a second substrate disposed on an observer side with respect to the first substrate and opposed to the first substrate, a liquid crystal held between the first substrate and the second substrate, an upper polarizing plate disposed on the observer side with respect to the second substrate, and a resin film disposed on the observer side with respect to the upper polarizing plate and affixed in contact with the upper polarizing plate. The resin film is higher in surface hardness than the upper polarizing plate and has a surface hardness of at least 3H in terms of surface pencil hardness. At least one of the first and second substrates has a thickness of no greater than 0.5 mm, and a total thickness of the liquid crystal display panel is no greater than 2 mm.

Claims (30)

1. A liquid crystal display device used in a hand-held electronic device comprising:

a first substrate comprising a TFT;

a second substrate bonded to the first substrate;

liquid crystal material held between the first substrate and the second substrate;

an upper polarizing plate fixed to the second substrate;

a protective member disposed over the upper polarizing plate; and

an adhesive member disposed between the protective member and the upper polarizing plate;

wherein the protective member is a protective cover of the hand-held electronic device; and

wherein no air layer is present between the protective member and the upper polarizing plate.

2. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein a surface pencil hardness of the protective member is at least 3H.

3. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein an upper surface of the second substrate is bonded to a sheath of the hand-held electronic device.

4. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein an upper surface of the upper polarizing plate is bonded to a sheath of the hand-held electronic device.

5. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the second substrate is no greater than 0.5 mm.

6. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 5 , wherein a thickness of the protective member is at least 0.2 mm and no greater than 1.0 mm.

7. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 6 , wherein a surface pencil hardness of the protective member is at least 3H.

8. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 7 , wherein an upper surface of the second substrate is bonded to a sheath of the hand-held electronic device.

9. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 7 , wherein an upper surface of the upper polarizing plate is bonded to a sheath of the hand-held electronic device.

10. A display device used in a hand-held electronic device comprising:

a TFT substrate;

a counter substrate bonded to the TFT substrate;

a polarizing plate disposed over the counter substrate;

a protective member disposed over the polarizing plate; and

an adhesive member disposed between the protective member and the polarizing plate;

wherein the protective member is a protective cover of the hand-held electronic device; and

wherein no air layer is present between the protective member and the polarizing plate.

11. A display device according to claim 10 , wherein a thickness of the counter substrate is no greater than 0.5 mm.

12. A display device according to claim 11 , wherein a thickness of the protective member is at least 0.2 mm and no greater than 1.0 mm.

13. A display device according to claim 12 , wherein a surface pencil hardness of the protective member is at least 3H.

14. A display device according to claim 13 , wherein an upper surface of the counter substrate is bonded to a sheath of the hand-held electronic device.

15. A display device according to claim 12 , wherein an upper surface of the upper polarizing plate is bonded to a sheath of the hand-held electronic device.
