Zinc oxide complexes
Disclosed are compounds comprising a zinc oxide molecule chemically bound to one or more molecules having an acidic hydrogen, such as an organic acid. The invention also provides compositions comprising such compounds and methods of preparing such compounds. The compounds of the invention may be provided in, for example, topical skin formulations, pharmaceutical compositions, or delivery systems for active ingredients.
1. A compound having the formula:
wherein R is O − or OH.
2. A process for making a compound of claim 1 comprising mixing a zinc oxide and a molecule having the formula:
in a liquid to form a substantially anhydrous mixture, wherein said liquid comprises at least 80% by weight of alcohol in said liquid; and
obtaining from the mixture a compound of claim 1 .
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the alcohol is methanol, ethanol, propanol, or isopropanol, or mixtures thereof.
4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the zinc oxide and the molecule of formula (III) are present in the mixture at a molar ratio of about 1:1 to about 2:1.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the mixture includes zinc oxide and the molecule of formula (III).
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the mixture is mixed for 7 to 21 days at room temperature.
7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the compound of claim 1 is obtained from the mixture by filtration followed by air-drying, evaporation, or spray-drying the filtrate.
8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the compound of claim 1 is in particulate or crystal form.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the liquid is at least 95% by weight alcohol.
10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mixture consists of zinc oxide, the molecule of formula (III), and alcohol.
