Abstract

A first content selection stored on a portable media device is associated with a first tag. In addition, a second tag that is associated with a second content selection and that indicates that supplemental content related to the second content selection is stored on a peer device is accessed from a peer device. The first tag is compared to the second tag, and, if a commonality shared by the first content selection and the second content selection is identified, an exchange of the supplemental content from the peer device to the portable media device is initiated.

Claims (31)

1. A method of exchanging information between portable peer devices, the method comprising:

generating a first identifier, the first identifier being associated with subject matter of a particular content selection of a first mobile device;

detecting, by the first mobile device, that a second mobile device is within a geographic proximity of the first mobile device;

receiving a second identifier from a second mobile device, the second identifier being associated with subject matter of supplemental content of the second mobile device that is related to the particular content selection of the first mobile device;

determining, based on the received second identifier, that the second mobile device contains supplemental content related to the particular content selection of the first mobile device;

receiving the supplemental content from the second mobile device;

displaying, in a graphical user interface of the first mobile device, the supplemental content in association with the particular content selection.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first and second identifiers are created by respective first and second users to record a logical association between a particular content selection and particular supplemental information.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the first and second identifiers comprise metadata tags that respectively identify the particular content selection and particular supplemental information.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the metadata tags comprise one or more of: a content selection description, keywords, user preferences, an indication of the existence of supplemental content, a geographic location of the mobile device, a date the content selection or supplemental content was created, and an author of the content selection or supplemental content.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the content selection comprises one or more of: an image file, a video file, an audio file, a text file, a web page, or an electronic document.

6. A method of exchanging information between portable peer devices, the method comprising:

transmitting a request for supplemental content from a first mobile device, the supplemental content being associated with a particular content selection stored on the first mobile device;

receiving an acknowledgement from a second mobile device that is detected by the first mobile device and determined to be within a geographic proximity of the first mobile device, wherein the acknowledgement indicates the existence of supplemental content stored on the second mobile device;

transmitting a request from the first mobile device to receive the supplemental content from the second mobile device;

receiving the supplemental content from the second mobile device;

displaying, in a graphical user interface of the first mobile device, the supplemental content receive from the second mobile device.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the particular content selection and the supplemental information are associated with each other using first and second identifiers that are created by respective first and second users to record a logical association between a particular content selection and particular supplemental information.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the particular content selection and the supplemental information are associated with each other using metadata tags that respectively identify the particular content selection and particular supplemental information.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the metadata tags comprise one or more of: a content selection description, keywords, user preferences, an indication of the existence of supplemental content, a geographic location of the mobile device, a date the content selection or supplemental content was created, and an author of the content selection or supplemental content.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein the metadata tags are automatically generated respectively by the first and second portable devices to record a logical association between a particular content selection and particular supplemental information.

11. A method of exchanging information between portable peer devices, the method comprising:

receiving, by a first portable device, a signal broadcast by a second portable device that is detected by the first mobile device and determined to be within a geographic proximity of the first mobile device, the signal indicating the existence of supplemental content associated with a particular content selection stored on the second portable device;

determining whether to request the supplemental content from the second portable device;

transmitting a request to receive the supplemental content from the second portable device upon a determination to request the supplemental content;

receiving the supplemental content from the second mobile device;

displaying, in a graphical user interface of the first mobile device, the supplemental content.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the particular content selection and the supplemental information are associated with each other using first and second identifiers that are created by respective first and second users to record a logical association between a particular content selection and particular supplemental information.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the particular content selection and the supplemental information are associated with each other using metadata tags that respectively identify the particular content selection and particular supplemental information.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the metadata tags comprise one or more of: a content selection description, keywords, user preferences, an indication of the existence of supplemental content, a geographic location of the mobile device, a date the content selection or supplemental content was created, and an author of the content selection or supplemental content.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the metadata tags are automatically generated respectively by the first and second portable devices to record a logical association between a particular content selection and particular supplemental information.
