Abstract

The present invention relates to fluoroolefin compositions. The fluoroolefin compositions of the present invention are useful as refrigerants or heat transfer fluids and in processes for producing cooling or heat. Additionally, the fluoroolefin compositions of the present invention may be used to replace currently used refrigerant or heat transfer fluid compositions that have higher global warming potential.

Claims (16)

1. A process to produce cooling, comprising:

condensing a composition comprising (1) a conventional refrigerant; and (2) a fluorinated butene; wherein the conventional refrigerant is CFC-114, HFC-245fa or HFC-236fa; and thereafter

evaporating said composition in the vicinity of a body to be cooled; wherein said condensing and evaporating takes place in a chiller; and wherein said fluorinated butene is selected from the group consisting of FC-1318my, HFC-1327my, HFC-1336yf and mixtures thereof.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein prior to said condensing, said composition comprising fluorinated butene is compressed in a compressor selected from the group consisting of centrifugal compressors, screw compressors, and scroll compressors.

3. The process of claim 2 wherein the compressor is a centrifugal compressor.

4. The process of claim 3 wherein said centrifugal compressor comprises a multistage centrifugal compressor.

5. The process of claim 4 , wherein said multistage centrifugal compressor comprises a 2 stage centrifugal compressor.

6. The process of claim 1 wherein the chiller includes an evaporator or condenser selected from the group consisting of fin and tube heat exchangers, microchannel heat exchangers, vertical or horizontal single pass tube or plate type heat exchangers, and single slab/single pass heat exchangers.

7. The process of claim 1 wherein the chiller is suitable for use with a heat transfer fluid selected from the group consisting of CFC-114, HFC-245fa and HFC-236fa.

8. The process of claim 7 wherein said fluorinated butene is used as a replacement for said heat transfer fluid.

9. The process of claim 8 wherein FC-1318my, HFC-1336yf or a mixture thereof is used as a replacement for CFC-114 or HFC-236fa.

10. A method for replacing an original refrigerant or heat transfer fluid composition with a second refrigerant or heat transfer fluid composition, comprising:

replacing the original refrigerant or heat transfer fluid with a composition comprising (1) a conventional refrigerant; and (2) a fluorinated butene; wherein the conventional refrigerant is CFC-114, HFC-245fa or HFC-236fa; as the second refrigerant or heat transfer fluid composition; wherein said original refrigerant or heat transfer fluid composition comprises CFC-114, HFC-245fa or HFC-236fa; and wherein said fluorinated butene is selected from the group consisting of FC-1318my, HFC-1327my, HFC-1336yf and mixtures thereof, wherein the original refrigerant or heat transfer fluid composition and the second refrigerant or heat transfer fluid composition is used in a chiller.

11. A refrigerant or heat transfer composition comprising (1) a conventional refrigerant; and (2) a fluorinated butene; wherein the conventional refrigerant is CFC-114, HFC-245fa or HFC-236fa; and wherein the fluorinated butene is FC-1318my, HFC-1327my or HFC-1336yf.

12. The refrigerant or heat transfer composition of claim 11 wherein the refrigerant component consists essentially of (1) CFC-114 or HFC-236fa and (2) FC-1318my or HFC-1336yf.

13. The refrigerant or heat transfer composition of claim 12 further comprising a stabilizer.
