Abstract

Carton blanks are disclosed for accommodating articles therein to form packages. A packaging system for packaging articles within blanks is capable of packaging a wide variety of packaging configurations.

Claims (128)

1. A package comprising:

a carton comprising

a plurality of panels extending around an interior of the carton, the plurality of panels being respectively foldably connected to one another, and the plurality of panels comprising

a bottom panel comprising opposite edges and a receiving aperture positioned between the opposite edges, wherein the receiving aperture extends through the bottom panel,

first and second side panels respectively extending upwardly from the opposite edges of the bottom panel, and

a top panel spaced apart from the bottom panel and extending between the first and second side panels, and

a pivoted panel connected to the plurality of panels, the pivoted panel extending from the receiving aperture to a location that is distant from both the bottom panel and the receiving aperture; and first and second containers, wherein for each container of the first and second containers

the carton is attached to the container,

the first and second containers extending upwardly through the receiving aperture into the interior of the carton, and

the pivoted panel engages and extends along the first and second containers.

2. The package according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second containers and the pivoted panel each extend downwardly from the receiving aperture.

3. The package according to claim 1 , wherein the pivoted panel is pivotably connected to the bottom panel.

4. The package according to claim 1 , wherein:

each of the first container, second container and pivoted panel extends downwardly from the receiving aperture; and

the pivoted panel covers each of

a portion of the first container that is positioned below the bottom panel,

a portion of the second container that is positioned below the bottom panel, and

a portion of a gap that is defined between the first container and the second container, wherein the portion of the gap is positioned below the bottom panel.

5. The package according to claim 1 , wherein for each container of the first and second containers:

a portion of the container extends downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton, and

the pivoted panel extends

downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton, and

along the portion of the container that extends downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton.

6. The package according to claim 1 , wherein:

a portion of the first container extends downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton;

the pivoted panel extends

downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton, and

along the portion of the first container that extends downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton;

a portion of the second container extends downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton;

the pivoted panel extends along the portion of the second container that extends downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton, so that the pivoted panel partially covers both

part of the portion of the first container that extends downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton, and

part of the portion of the second container that extends downwardly from the receiving aperture and away from the interior of the carton.

7. The package according to claim 6 , wherein:

the pivoted panel is a first pivoted panel;

the carton further comprises second and third pivoted panels;

for each pivoted panel of the second and third pivoted panels, the pivoted panel extends upwardly from the receiving aperture to a location that is within the interior of the carton and distant from both the bottom panel and the receiving aperture;

the second pivoted panel engages and extends along a portion of the first container within the interior of the carton; and

the third pivoted panel engages and extends along a portion of the second container within the interior of the carton.

8. The package according to claim 7 , wherein the first pivoted panel is larger than each of the second and third pivoted panels.

9. The package according to claim 7 , wherein:

the first pivoted panel is hingedly connected to the bottom panel along a hinge axis;

the second pivoted panel is hingedly connected to a portion of the first side panel at a hinge line;

the portion of the first side panel is positioned between and distant from each of opposite ends of the bottom panel; and

the hinge line and the hinge axis are substantially perpendicular to one another.

10. The package according to claim 7 , wherein:

the second pivoted panel is hingedly connected to the first side panel at a first hinge line;

the third pivoted panel is hingedly connected to the second side panel at a second hinge line; and

the first and second hinge lines are substantially parallel to one another.

11. A package, comprising:

a container; and

a carton attached to the container, the carton comprising

a main panel,

first and second side panels respectively extending from opposite edges of the main panel,

a receiving aperture extending through the main panel, the container extending through the receiving aperture, and the receiving aperture having a periphery,

first and second pivoted panels that are spaced apart from one another around the periphery of the receiving aperture, wherein

for each pivoted panel of the first and second pivoted panels, the pivoted panel extends from the periphery of the receiving aperture to a location that is distant from both the main panel and the receiving aperture,

the first and second pivoted panels extend in substantially opposite directions so that outer ends of the first and second pivoted panels are respectively located at opposite sides of the main panel,

the first pivoted panel engages and extends along the container,

the first pivoted panel obstructs an end of the carton,

the second pivoted panel is positioned between the first side panel and the container,

the container is configured so that the first pivoted panel has been pivoted relative to the main panel about a first axis, and the second pivoted panel has been pivoted relative to the main panel about a second axis, and

the first and second axes are substantially perpendicular to one another,

12. The package according to claim 11 , wherein:

the container is a first container;

the package further comprises a second container that is in a columnar arrangement with the first container; and

the second pivoted panel engages and extends along the second container.

13. The package according to claim 11 , wherein:

the main panel is a bottom panel;

the first and second side panels respectively extend upwardly from the opposite edges of the bottom panel; and

the carton further comprises a top panel spaced apart from the bottom panel and extending between the first and second side panels.

14. The package according to claim 13 , wherein:

the container and the first pivoted panel each extend downwardly from the receiving aperture; and

the first pivoted panel engages and extends along the container.

15. A package, comprising:

a first container;

a carton attached to the first container, the carton comprising

a bottom panel,

first and second side panels respectively extending upwardly from opposite edges of the bottom panel,

a top panel spaced apart from the bottom panel and extending between the first and second side panels,

a receiving aperture extending through the bottom panel, the first container extending through the receiving aperture, and the receiving aperture having a periphery,

first and second pivoted panels that are spaced apart from one another around the periphery of the receiving aperture, wherein

for each pivoted panel of the first and second pivoted panels, the pivoted panel extends from the periphery of the receiving aperture to a location that is distant from both the bottom panel and the receiving aperture,

the first and second pivoted panels extend in substantially opposite directions so that outer ends of the first and second pivoted panels are respectively located at opposite sides of the bottom panel,

the first pivoted panel engages and extends along the first container,

the first pivoted panel obstructs an end of the carton,

the second pivoted panel is positioned between the first side panel and the first container; and

a second container to which the carton is attached, wherein

the second container extends through the receiving aperture into the interior of the carton;

the first container, second container and first pivoted panel each extend downwardly from the receiving aperture,

the first pivoted panel covers a portion of the first container,

the first pivoted panel engages and extends along the second container, so that the first pivoted panel also covers a portion of the second container, and

the first pivoted panel is larger than the second pivoted panel.

16. The package according to claim 13 , wherein:

the first container comprises a flange positioned in the interior of the carton at a position distant from the bottom panel, and

the second pivoted panel extends upwardly from the receiving aperture and engages an underside of the flange.

17. A blank comprising:

a first side panel, a second side panel, a top panel and a bottom panel respectively foldably connected to one another;

a receiving aperture defined in the bottom panel;

a first pivotable panel defined in the bottom panel so that the first pivotable panel extends from a first outermost edge of the bottom panel into the receiving aperture; and

a second pivotable panel defined in the bottom panel so that the second pivotable panel extends from a second outermost edge of the bottom panel into the receiving aperture.

18. The blank according to claim 17 , wherein the first and second outermost edges are opposite from one another and substantially parallel to one another.

19. The blank according to claim 17 , wherein the first and second outermost edges are substantially perpendicular to one another.

20. The blank according to claim 19 , wherein the first pivotable panel is substantially larger than the second pivotable panel.

21. The blank according to claim 17 , wherein the first outermost edge of the bottom panel is a free edge of the bottom panel.

22. The blank according to claim 21 , comprising spaced apart lines of disruption extending inwardly from the free edge of the bottom panel for partially defining the first pivotable panel.

23. The blank according to claim 22 , wherein:

the first side panel, the second side panel, the top panel and the bottom panel being respectively foldably connected to one another comprises a fold line being positioned between and foldably connecting the bottom panel to the first side panel, and

the lines of disruption extend obliquely relative to the fold line.

24. A blank comprising:

a first side panel, a second side panel, a top panel and a bottom panel respectively foldably connected to one another, comprising a first fold line positioned between and foldably connecting an outermost edge of the bottom panel to the first side panel;

a receiving aperture defined in the bottom panel;

a pivotable panel defined in the bottom panel so that the pivotable panel extends from the outermost edge of the bottom panel into the receiving aperture;

a second fold line positioned between and foldably connecting the pivotable panel to the first side panel; and

the first and second fold lines being substantially collinear with one another.

25. The blank according to claim 24 , wherein:

the outermost edge of the bottom panel is a first outermost edge of the bottom panel;

a second outermost edge of the bottom panel extends substantially perpendicularly relative to the first outermost edge of the bottom panel; and

a line of disruption extends in the bottom panel from proximate the second outermost edge of the bottom panel to proximate the pivotable panel, so that the line of disruption extends along, and obliquely to, the first fold line.

26. The blank according to claim 24 , wherein:

the pivotable panel is a first pivotable panel;

the outermost edge of the bottom panel is a first outermost edge of the bottom panel;

a second pivotable panel is defined in the bottom panel so that the second pivotable panel extends from a second outermost edge of the bottom panel into the receiving aperture; and

the second pivotable panel is smaller than the first pivotable panel.

27. The blank according to claim 24 , wherein the pivotable panel is for bracing against a flange of a container when the blank is wrapped and secured around the container.

28. The package according to claim 9 , wherein the hinge line and the hinge axis are perpendicular to one another.

29. The blank according to claim 18 , wherein the first and second outermost edges are parallel to one another.

30. The blank according to claim 19 , wherein the first and second outermost edges are perpendicular to one another.

31. The blank according to claim 24 , wherein the first and second fold lines are collinear with one another.
