Abstract

In certain embodiments, a vial adaptor for removing liquid contents from a vial comprises a piercing member and a bag. The bag can be contained within the piercing member such that the bag is introduced to the vial when the vial adaptor is coupled with the vial. In some embodiments, the bag expands within the vial as liquid is removed from the vial via the adaptor, thereby regulating pressure within the vial. In other embodiments, a vial comprises a bag for regulating pressure within the vial as liquid is removed therefrom. In some embodiments, a vial adaptor is coupled with the vial in order to remove the liquid. In some embodiments, as the liquid is removed from the vial via the adaptor, the bag expands within the vial, and in other embodiments, the bag contracts within the vial.

Claims (26)

1. A pressure regulating vial adaptor for coupling with a vial, the adaptor comprising:

a cap connector configured to couple the adaptor with the vial;

a medical connector interface configured to couple the adaptor with a medical device;

a piercing member configured to pierce a septum of the vial upon coupling the adaptor with the vial, the piercing member comprising a sheath portion having at least one piercing member aperture in fluid communication with a regulator channel and an extractor aperture in fluid connection with the interior of the vial; and

an expansion member connected to the piercing member, the expansion member configured to move between a first orientation in which at least a portion of the expansion member is at least partially unexpanded or folded and a second orientation in which at least a portion of the expansion member is at least partially expanded or unfolded when medicinal fluid is withdrawn from the vial, wherein the expansion member is configured to expand both a) in a direction that is at least orthogonal to the elongate axis of the piercing member, at least partially in response to a change in a volume of a medicinal fluid contained in the vial, and b) without increasing an overall length of the vial adaptor, the overall length defined as a distance between a proximal end of the vial adaptor and a distal end of the vial adaptor.

2. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one piercing member aperture is configured to allow regulating fluid to pass therethrough.

3. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the piercing member further comprises a tapered portion comprising a tip, wherein the sheath portion is disposed between the tapered portion and the cap connector.

4. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the expansion member comprises an expandable material.

5. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the expansion member comprises a non-expandable material.

6. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one piercing member aperture comprises a rounded edge.

7. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one piercing member aperture comprises a beveled edge.

8. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one piercing member aperture is spaced apart from an extractor aperture, such that the expansion member does not obstruct the extractor aperture as the expansion member expands.

9. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the expansion member comprises a first thickness and a second thickness, the first thickness being greater than the second thickness.

10. The pressure regulating vial adaptor of claim 9 , wherein the first thickness of the expansion member is positioned adjacent to the at least one piercing member aperture in a manner that inhibits the expansion member from tearing as the expansion member expands.

11. A method of withdrawing fluid from a vial, the method comprising:

providing a pressure regulating adaptor for coupling with the vial, the adaptor comprising:

a cap connector configured to couple the adaptor with the vial,

a medical connector interface configured to couple the adaptor with a medical device,

a piercing member configured to pierce a septum of the vial upon coupling the adaptor with the vial, the piercing member comprising a sheath portion having at least one piercing member aperture in fluid communication with a regulator channel and an extractor aperture in fluid connection with the interior of the vial; and

an expansion member connected to the piercing member, wherein the expansion member is configured to move between a first orientation in which at least a portion of the expansion member is at least partially unexpanded or folded and a second orientation in which at least a portion of the expansion member is at least partially expanded or unfolded when medicinal fluid is withdrawn from the vial, and wherein the expansion member is configured to expand both a) in a direction that is at least orthogonal to the elongate axis of the piercing member, at least partially in response to a change in a volume of a medicinal fluid contained in the vial, and b) without increasing an overall length of the vial adaptor, the overall length defined as a distance between a proximal end of the vial adaptor and a distal end of the vial adaptor;

coupling the pressure regulating adaptor with the vial;

and withdrawing medicinal fluid from the vial.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein movement of the expansion member between a first orientation and a second orientation is at least partially in response to a change in the volume of medicinal fluid contained in the vial.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the adaptor defines an extractor aperture, the extractor aperture configured to provide fluid communication between an interior of the vial and an extractor channel.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the expansion member is positioned such that the expansion member does not obstruct the extractor aperture when the expansion member moves between the first orientation and the second orientation.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the extractor aperture is located adjacent an interior surface of the septum of the vial, thereby permitting withdrawal of most or all of the medicinal fluid from the vial when the adaptor is coupled with the vial.
