Abstract

A deployment and retrieval method for ocean bottom seismic receivers, the method employs a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) having a carrier attached thereto to carry a plurality of receivers. The receivers are individually placed on the ocean bottom floor by utilizing a conveyor to move the receivers along a linear path to remove the receivers from the carrier. In one embodiment, multiple linear conveyors may be operated independently to alter the relative positions of the receivers on the respective conveyors to adjust the weight distribution of the receivers within the carrier.

Claims (14)

1. A method for deployment of ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) units on the ocean floor, said method comprising:

a. providing a plurality of autonomous OBS units,

b. transporting said plurality of autonomous OBS units from a surface vessel to the ocean floor in a carrier attached to a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), wherein the carrier is provided with at least two separate, movable conveyor belts having linear paths upon each of which at least some of the plurality of autonomous OBS units are disposed; and

c. utilizing the ROV to individually place the plurality of autonomous OBS units on the ocean floor,

d. wherein said placement is accomplished by utilizing the at least two separate, movable conveyor belts carried by the ROV to move at least some of the plurality of autonomous OBS units disposed on at least one of the at least two separate, movable conveyor belts along the linear path.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of operating the at least two separate, moveable conveyor belts independently to adjust a weight distribution of the plurality of autonomous OBS units in the carrier.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of moving at least some of the plurality of autonomous OBS units on one of the at least two separate, moveable conveyor belts in a first direction and moving at least some other of the plurality of autonomous OBS units on a different one of the at least two separate, moveable conveyor belts in a second direction different from the first direction.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of operating at least one of the at least two separate, moveable conveyor belts so as to move at least one of the plurality of autonomous OBS units to a discharge position.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising the step of discharging the at least one of the plurality of autonomous OBS units from the carrier.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of discharging comprises engaging the at least one of the plurality of autonomous OBS units in the discharge position with a robotic arm and placing the OBS unit on the ocean floor.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein once the at least one of the plurality of autonomous OBS units has been removed from the discharge position, operating at least one of the at least two separate, moveable conveyor belts so as to move another OBS unit to a discharge position, engaging the another OBS unit in the discharge position with the robotic arm and placing the another OBS unit on the ocean floor.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising the step of repeating the steps of moving, engaging and placing until a plurality of OBS units have been deployed on the ocean floor.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of discharging comprises operating at least one of the at least two separate, moveable conveyor belts so as to release the at least one of the plurality of autonomous OBS units in the discharge position from the carrier.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of discharging comprises utilizing a spring mechanism to eject the at least one of the plurality of autonomous OBS units in the discharge position from the carrier.
