Abstract

Devices, methods and systems disclosed herein relate to a universal charger which provides a power supply for the charging of OMTP devices and non-OMTP devices based on whether an OMTP mobile communication device or a non-OMTP mobile communication device is connected. A power charging apparatus is provided for charging a mobile communication device. The power charging apparatus includes a connector for connecting to a charging port of the mobile communication device, and a controller coupled to the connector, the controller configured to determine whether the mobile communication device connected to the connector is a non-OMTP mobile communication device or an OMTP mobile communication device, the controller further configured to charge a non-OMTP mobile communication device when a non-OMTP mobile communication device is connected to the connector, and further configured to charge an OMTP mobile communication device when an OMTP mobile communication device is connected to the connector.

Claims (26)

1. A power charging apparatus for charging a mobile communication device, comprising:

a connector for connecting to a charging port of the mobile communication device and including a V pin for providing current for charging the mobile communication device, a D+ pin, and a D− pin;

a voltage divider coupled to the V pin, the D+ pin, and the D− pin; and

a controller including an input coupled to the voltage divider such that a voltage at the input is provided from the voltage divider, the controller configured to determine whether the mobile communication device connected to the connector is a non-OMTP mobile communication device or an OMTP mobile communication device, the controller further configured to provide a first current for charging a non-OMTP mobile communication device from the V pin when a non-OMTP mobile communication device is connected to the connector, and further configured to short the D+ pin and the D− pin across at least a portion of the voltage divider to provide a second current for charging an OMTP mobile communication device from the V pin when an OMTP mobile communication device is connected to the connector, the second current being different than the first current.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to detect whether the voltage at the input is higher than a predetermined threshold.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the controller is configured to determine that the mobile communication device connected to the connector is a non-OMTP mobile communication device when the voltage at the input is above the predetermined threshold.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the controller is configured to determine that the mobile communication device connected to the connector is an OMTP mobile communication device when the voltage at the input is below the predetermined threshold.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the connector is a USB connector.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an adapter electrically connected to the controller for insertion into a power outlet on a wall.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an adapter electrically connected to the controller for insertion into a power outlet in a vehicle.

8. A power charging apparatus for charging a mobile communication device, comprising:

a connector for connecting to a charging port of the mobile communication device and including a V pin for providing current for charging the mobile communication device, a D+ pin, and a D− pin;

a voltage divider coupled to the V pin, the D+ pin, and the D− pin; and

a controller including an input coupled to the voltage divider such that a voltage at the input is provided from the voltage divider, the controller configured to detect whether the voltage at the input from the voltage divider is below a predetermined threshold and configured to short the D+ pin and the D− pin across at least a portion of the voltage divider upon detecting the voltage is below the predetermined threshold to vary the current provided by the V pin to the mobile communication device.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the voltage divider is coupled to the V pin such that a first current is supplied to the mobile communication device when the controller shorts the D+ pin and the D− pin.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the first current is an amount of current appropriate for charging an OMTP mobile communication device.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the voltage divider is coupled to the V pin such that a second current is supplied to the mobile communication device when the D+ and the D− pin are not shorted.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the second current is an amount of current appropriate for charging a non-OMTP mobile communication device.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the voltage divider includes at least a first resistor, a second resistor, and a third resistor,

the first resistor being coupled between the V pin and one of the D+ pin or the D− pin, and

the second resistor being coupled between the D+ pin and the D− pin.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the input is coupled to the voltage divider between the third resistor and a ground.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the voltage divider is coupled to the D+ pin and the D− pin such that a connection of an OMTP mobile communication device to the connector varies a voltage provided from the voltage divider.

16. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the controller is configured to short the D+ pin and the D− pin by turning on a transistor.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the transistor is a PNP, a NPN, or a MOSFET.

18. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the V pin, the first resistor, the D+ pin, the second resistor, and the D− pin are coupled to each other in series.
