Abstract

A system and method for providing a user-adjustable display of clusters and text is provided. A two-dimensional display of cluster spines is provided. The cluster spines each include clusters of documents proximately aligned. A compass is provided within the display and positioned over one or more clusters of at least one cluster spine based on instructions from a user. The display of the clusters positioned within the compass is altered. Spine labels are positioned circumferentially around the compass. Each spine label represents a concept associated with one of the cluster spines positioned within the compass.

Claims (50)

1. A system for providing a user-adjustable display of clusters and text, comprising:

a spine display module to provide a two-dimensional display of cluster spines each comprising clusters of documents proximately aligned;

a compass module to provide a compass within the display and positioned over one or more clusters of at least one cluster spine based on instructions from a user;

a cluster spine placement module to alter the display of the clusters positioned within the compass;

a label display module to position spine labels circumferentially around the compass, wherein each spine label represents a concept associated with one of the cluster spines positioned within the compass and the spine labels are non-overlapping around the circumference of the compass; and

a processor to execute the modules.

2. A system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a concept pointer to connect an outermost cluster of a cluster spine to a closest point along a periphery of the compass.

3. A system according to claim 2 , further comprising:

slots positioned at an end of each concept pointer at the periphery of the compass.

4. A system according to claim 3 , further comprising:

a label assignment module to assign at least one spine label to one of the slots by generating a set of slice objects for each concept, wherein each slice object defines an angular region of the compass and is associated with one of the slots, and by positioning the spine label within the slot corresponding to one of the cluster spines having a closest angularity to the slot.

5. A system according to claim 2 , wherein the concept pointer is highlighted when a concept within the cluster spine connected to that concept pointer is selected.

6. A system according to claim 1 , wherein the display is altered by at least one of increasing detail of the clusters positioned within the compass by zooming in on the clusters, decreasing detail of the clusters positioned within the compass by zooming away from the clusters, and shifting locations of the clusters within the compass by panning the compass.

7. A system according to claim 1 , wherein the clusters appearing outside the compass are deemphasized.

8. A system according to claim 7 , wherein the deemphasis comprises at least one of reducing a brightness of the clusters outside the compass, reducing a line width of the outside clusters, and assigning a particular color to the outside clusters.

9. A system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a set of set-aside trays to graphically group those documents that have been selected into sorting categories.

10. A system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a concept list comprising the spine labels.

11. A system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one other compass provided in the display, wherein the compass and the other compasses are positioned in at least one of disjunctive, overlapping, and concentric configurations.

12. A method for providing a user-adjustable display of clusters and text, comprising:

providing a two-dimensional display of cluster spines each comprising clusters of documents proximately aligned;

providing a compass within the display and positioning the compass over one or more clusters of at least one cluster spine based on instructions from a user;

altering the display of the clusters positioned within the compass; and

displaying spine labels positioned circumferentially around the compass, wherein each spine label represents a concept associated with one of the cluster spines positioned within the compass and the spine labels are non-overlapping around the circumference of the compass.

13. A method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

connecting an outermost cluster of a cluster spine to a closest point along a periphery of the compass via a concept pointer.

14. A method according to claim 13 , further comprising:

generating slots at an end of each concept pointer at the periphery of the compass.

15. A method according to claim 14 , further comprising:

assigning at least one spine label to one of the slots, comprising:

generating a set of slice objects for each concept, wherein each slice object defines an angular region of the compass and is associated with one of the slots; and

positioning the spine label within the slot corresponding to one of the cluster spines having a closest angularity to the slot.

16. A method according to claim 13 , further comprising:

highlighting the concept pointer when a concept within the cluster spine connected to that concept pointer is selected.

17. A method according to claim 12 , wherein the display is altered comprising at least one of:

increasing detail of the clusters positioned within the compass by zooming in on the clusters;

decreasing detail of the clusters positioned within the compass by zooming away from the clusters;

shifting locations of the clusters within the compass by panning the compass.

18. A method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

deemphasizing the clusters appearing outside the compass.

19. A method according to claim 18 , wherein the deemphasis comprises at least one of reducing a brightness of the clusters outside the compass, reducing a line width of the outside clusters, and assigning a particular color to the outside clusters.

20. A method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

graphically grouping those documents that have been selected into sorting categories via a set of set-aside trays.

21. A method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

generating a concept list comprising the spine labels.

22. A method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

providing at least one other compass within the display, wherein the compass and the other compasses are positioned in at least one of disjunctive, overlapping, and concentric configurations.
