Abstract

A method of making a porous membrane is disclosed. One such method optionally includes: forming a plurality of pillars in an array form over a substrate; and forming a layer with a mixture of a porous material precursor and a surfactant over the substrate. The method optionally includes removing the pillars to leave cavities in the layer; filling the cavities in the layer with a cavity filler; and removing the surfactant from the layer. The porous membrane can be used as, for example, a sieve for separating molecules from a chemical reaction.

Claims (18)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a first layer having a thickness between about 100 nm to about 1 μm, the first layer including a plurality of first pores having a first diameter between 2 nm and about 50 nm, wherein the plurality of first pores permit fluid and/or molecules having a diameter smaller than the first diameter to pass through the first layer, wherein the first layer includes a first portion that includes the first pores, and wherein the first portion is formed of Mobile Crystalline Material (MCM)-41 or Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 SBA-15), and wherein the first layer further includes a plurality of second portions forming pillars penetrating the first layer, the second portions being non-porous; and

a second layer attached to the first layer, the second layer including one or more second pores having a second diameter greater than the first diameter, wherein the one or more second pores are aligned to permit the fluid and/or molecules to pass from the first layer through the second layer.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first layer includes a surface, and wherein the plurality of first pores extend in a direction substantially vertical to the surface.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second diameter is equal to or greater than about 50 nm.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pillars are arranged in a geometric pattern.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the geometric pattern comprises two or more rows of pillars.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the geometric pattern comprises two or more columns of pillars.

7. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the geometric pattern comprises two or more diagonal lines of pillars.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first pores have an inner surface, and wherein the apparatus further comprises molecules attached to the inner surface of the first pores.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the molecules comprise one or more selected from the group consisting of a polynucleotide, a polypeptide, a branched or unbranched C1-C30 alkyl group, and a compound comprising an alkoxide group.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the polynucleotide comprises a hairpin DNA.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a conduit configured to flow a fluid through the first and second layers.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first layer comprises calcine.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the second layer comprises calcine.

14. A method of separating molecules, the method comprising:

flowing a fluid containing molecules of different sizes through the first and second layers of the apparatus of claim 1 .

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the molecules of different sizes are produced by a coupling reaction.
