Abstract

A process is provided for polymerizing fluoromonomer in an aqueous medium, wherein a dispersion of essentially surfactant-free hydrocarbon-containing oleophilic nucleation sites is first formed in the aqueous medium, and then polymerization is commenced to form a dispersion of fluoropolymer particles at the oleophilic nucleation sites, wherein the nucleation sites can be derived from hydrocarbon-containing compound. The surfactant used to stabilize the fluoropolymer dispersion can also be hydrocarbon-containing.

Claims (6)

1. Process for polymerizing fluoromonomer in an aqueous medium in a polymerization reactor to form a dispersion of fluoropolymer particles in said aqueous medium, comprising (a) providing said aqueous medium in said reactor, (b) adding water-soluble hydrocarbon compound that contains hydrophobic moiety and hydrophilic moiety to said aqueous medium, (c) degrading said hydrophilic moiety of said compound in said aqueous medium, thereby enabling said hydrophobic moiety to form a dispersion of oleophilic nucleation sites in said aqueous medium, said dispersion of oleophilic nucleation sites being essentially free of surfactant, (d) pressuring up said reactor with said fluoromonomer to the pressure at which said polymerizing is carried out, and (e) adding polymerization initiator to said aqueous medium to cause kicking off of said polymerizing of said fluoromonomer.

2. The process of claim 1 and additionally, prior to step (c) adding water-soluble inorganic salt to said aqueous medium to aid in the formation of said dispersion of oleophilic nucleation sites.

3. The process of claim 2 wherein the amount of said hydrocarbon compound added to said aqueous medium is no greater than 50 ppm and the amount of said salt added to said aqueous medium is no greater than 120 ppm.

4. The process of claim 1 and additionally adding degradation agent to said aqueous medium to obtain said degrading.

5. The process of claim 4 wherein said degrading agent is polymerization initiator in an insufficient amount to cause said kicking off of said polymerizing of said fluoromonomer.

6. The process of claim 5 wherein said polymerization initiator is added in an amount that is no greater than 50 ppm.
