Abstract

A medical device includes a structure configured for introduction to a vascular system of a patient. The structure including a surface having sodium nitroprusside and silver disposed thereupon, The sodium nitroprusside has a concentration sufficient to reduce thrombosis. To make the medical device, a base material is impregnated with sodium nitroprusside, the medical device is formed from the base material, and the medical device is coated with an antimicrobial agent.

Claims (39)

1 . A method of fabricating a medical catheter, the method comprising:

impregnating a base material with nitroprusside;

forming the medical catheter from the base material; and

coating the medical catheter with an antimicrobial agent

2 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

impregnating the base material with sodium nitroprusside;

3 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

coating the medical catheter with silver.

4 . The method according to claim 3 , further comprising:

coating the medical catheter with nano-scale particles of silver.

5 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

coating the medical catheter with chlorhexidine base and/or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

6 . The method according to claim 5 , further comprising:

coating the medical catheter with chlorhexidine diacetate.

7 . The method according to claim 5 , further comprising:

coating the medical catheter with chlorhexidine dodecanoate.

8 . The method according to claim 5 , further comprising:

coating the medical catheter with chlorhexidine palmitate.

9 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

impregnating the base material with an antimicrobial dye.

10 . The method according to claim 9 , wherein the antimicrobial dye includes one or more of gentian violet, methyl violet, brilliant green, and methylene blue.

11 . The method according to claim 1 , further including:

coating the medical catheter with an antibiotic agent.

12 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein the antibiotic agent includes rifampin.

13 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

forming a tubular structure from the base material.

14 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the base material is a polymer.

15 . The method according to claim 14 , wherein the base material is a polyurethane.

16 . A method of fabricating a medical catheter, the method comprising:

mixing a base material with nitroprusside and an antimicrobial agent; and

melt processing and extruding the mixture to fabricate the medical catheter.

17 . The method according to claim 16 , further comprising:

mixing the base material with silver.

18 . The method according to claim 17 , further comprising:

mixing the base material with nano-scale particles of silver.

19 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

mixing the base material with chlorhexidine base and/or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and an antimicrobial dye including one or more of gentian violet, methyl violet, brilliant green, and methylene blue.

20 . The method according to claim 19 , further comprising:

mixing the base material with chlorhexidine dipalmitate and gentian violet.
