Abstract

A communications system includes a receiver and at least one transmitter. The receiver receives, from different intermediate systems, biometric samples from parties attempting to obtain services from the intermediate systems and information characterizing the expected identifies of the parties. The at least one transmitter transmits, to the intermediate systems, verification that the biometric samples match pre-registered biometric information obtained from a storage device such that the expected identities of the parties is verified as the identities of the parties.

Claims (53)

1. A communications system for verifying expected identities of parties, the communications system comprising:

a receiver of a computer that receives, from a first intermediate system when a first party attempts to obtain a first service using the first intermediate system, a first biometric sample from the first party and information characterizing the expected identity of the first party, and that receives, from a second intermediate system when a second party attempts to obtain a second service using the second intermediate system, a second biometric sample from the second party and information characterizing the expected identity of the second party; and

a transmitter that transmits, to the first intermediate system, verification that the first biometric sample matches pre-registered biometric information obtained from a storage device such that the expected identity of the first party is verified as the identity of the first party, and that transmits, to the second intermediate system, verification that the second biometric sample matches pre-registered biometric information obtained from the storage device such that the expected identity of the second party is verified as the identity of the second party,

wherein the first service is provided contingent on verification by the communications system of the expected identity of the first party as the identity of the first party, and

wherein the second service is provided contingent on verification by the communications system of the expected identity of the second party as the identity of the second party.

2. The communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein the communications system comprises a centralized verification system that verifies identities of parties for a plurality of geographically distinct intermediate systems that provide services to parties contingent upon verification of expected identities of the parties.

3. The communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein the communications system comprises a centralized verification system that verifies identities of parties for a plurality of distinct intermediate systems that provide services of different types to parties contingent upon verification of expected identities of the parties.

4. The communications system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a speech characteristics database that stores the pre-registered biometric information.

5. The communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein the intermediate systems comprise intelligent peripheral communications platforms in a communications network.

6. The communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein the first intermediate system comprises a voicemail communications platform.

7. The communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein the first intermediate system comprises a wireless network communications platform.

8. The communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein the first intermediate system and the second intermediate system selectively determine whether to request the verification by the communications system.

9. A method for verifying for a communications system expected identities of parties, the method comprising:

receiving, at a communications system from a first intermediate system when a first party attempts to obtain a first service using the first intermediate system, a first biometric sample from the first party and information characterizing the expected identity of the first party,

receiving, at the communications system from a second intermediate system when a second party attempts to obtain a second service using the second intermediate system, a second biometric sample from the second party and information characterizing the expected identity of the second party;

transmitting, to the first intermediate system, verification that the first biometric sample matches pre-registered biometric information obtained from a storage device such that the expected identity of the first party is verified as the identity of the first party, and

transmitting, to the second intermediate system, verification that the second biometric sample matches pre-registered biometric information obtained from the storage device such that the expected identity of the second party is verified as the identity of the second party,

wherein the first service is provided contingent on verification by the communications system of the expected identity of the first party as the identity of the first party, and

wherein the second service is provided contingent on verification by the communications system of the expected identity of the second party as the identity of the second party.

10. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein the communications system comprises a server and a database.

11. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein the communications system comprises the storage device from which the pre-registered biometric information is obtained.

12. The method of claim 11 ,

wherein the storage device comprises a speech characteristics database that stores pre-registered voice information in association with identification information that identifies the party.

13. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein the communications system communicates with the first intermediate system and the second intermediate system over the internet.

14. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein the first party communicates with the first intermediate system over the internet.

15. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein verification using the communications system is provided as a subscription service.

16. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein the first intermediate system and the second intermediate system each provide services to a plurality of parties.

17. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein the first intermediate system comprises a network communications platform.

18. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein the communications system and the first intermediate system each communicate with the first party in the same communication session.

19. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein the first intermediate system comprises a transaction platform used by the public to conduct a financial transaction.

20. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing a program that verifies for a communications system expected identities of parties, the program causing a computer, when executed by a processor of the computer, to:

receive, from a first intermediate system when a first party attempts to obtain a first service using the first intermediate system, a first biometric sample from the first party and information characterizing the expected identity of the first party;

receive, from a second intermediate system when a second party attempts to obtain a second service using the second intermediate system, a second biometric sample from the second party and information characterizing the expected identity of the second party;

transmit, to the first intermediate system, verification that the first biometric sample matches pre-registered biometric information obtained from a storage device such that the expected identity of the first party is verified as the identity of the first party, and

transmit, to the second intermediate system, verification that the second biometric sample matches pre-registered biometric information obtained from the storage device such that the expected identity of the second party is verified as the identity of the second party,

wherein the first service is provided contingent on verification by the communications system of the expected identity of the first party as the identity of the first party, and

wherein the second service is provided contingent on verification by the communications system of the expected identity of the second party as the identity of the second party.
