Abstract

A break-away wiper arm assembly which allows a vehicle escape window to be opened rapidly without any delays or undue forces to impede the escape of the vehicle crew. The invention uses a two piece coupling held together using a retaining ring. As the window is pushed open, the window frame pushes against the wiper arm which overcomes the retaining ring retention force allowing the wiper arm to break away, clearing the area in front of the window for free motion of the window and the unimpeded exit of vehicle occupants.

Claims (15)

1. A break-away wiper arm assembly for a vehicle having an emergency egress

window system, the assembly comprising:

a wiper arm;

a wiper extension connected to the wiper arm at a first end; and

a wiper motor shaft at an opposing second end,

said wiper extension includes a torque cap fastened to the wiper motor shaft, said torque cap holding an adapter shaft by way of a retaining ring,

said adapter shaft includes at least one tab which mates with a recess within an arcuate projection of the torque cap.

2. The break-away wiper arm assembly of claim 1 wherein the retaining ring is a semi-flexible ring disposed within a groove in the torque cap.

3. The break-away wiper arm assembly of claim 2 wherein the ring is a split ring.

4. The break-away wiper arm assembly of claim 1 wherein the wiper extension adapter shaft extends through a bore defined by the torque cap.

5. The break-away wiper arm assembly of claim 4 wherein a fastener is connected to the wiper motor shaft, said fastener sized to fit within a central recess surrounding the bore of the torque cap.

6. The break-away wiper arm assembly of claim 5 wherein the fastener is a washer and a locknut.

7. The break-away wiper arm assembly of claim 1 wherein the tab includes a grooved section, said grooved section matching the groove of the torque cap so that the groove circumscribes the wiper extension.

8. The break-away wiper arm assembly of claim 1 wherein the adapter shaft includes a cylindrical protrusion for connecting the wiper arm to the wiper extension.

9. The break-away wiper arm assembly of claim 1 wherein the adapter shaft defines a frustoconical recess sized for the wiper motor shaft.
