Abstract

Transgenic soybean seed having increased total fatty acid content of at least 10% and altered fatty acid profiles when compared to the total fatty acid content of non-transgenic, null segregant soybean seed are described. DGAT genes from Yarrowia Lipolytica are used to achieve the increase in seed storage lipids.

Claims (11)

1. Meal obtained from a transgenic soybean seed having increased total fatty acid content of at least 10% when compared to the total fatty acid content of a non-transgenic, null segregant soybean seed, wherein the percentage of fatty acids that are represented by linoleic acids is decreased, wherein said transgenic seed and the meal obtained from said transgenic seed comprise a recombinant construct having at least one diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) sequence, and wherein said at least one DGAT sequence comprises the nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:10, and wherein the protein content of said meal is increased when compared to the protein content of a meal obtained from a non-transgenic, null segregant soybean seed.

2. The meal obtained from a transgenic soybean according to claim 1 , wherein the protein content of said meal is increased by at least 1.5% points when compared to the protein content of meal obtained from a non-transgenic, null segregant soybean seed.

3. A method for increasing the protein content of a meal obtained from a soybean seed, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) transforming at least one regenerable soybean cell with at least one recombinant construct comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:10;

(b) regenerating a transgenic plant comprising the recombinant DNA construct from the regenerable soybean cell of (a);

(c) obtaining transgenic seed from the transgenic plant of step (b), or a transgenic progeny plant from the plant of step (b), wherein said transgenic seed comprises the recombinant DNA construct; and

(d) selecting the transgenic seed of step (c) having an increased total fatty acid content of at least 10% when compared to non-transgenic, null segregant soybean seed, wherein the percentage of fatty acids that are represented by linoleic acids is decreased; and

wherein meal produced from the transgenic soybean seed has increased protein content compared to a second meal prepared from the non-transgenic, null segregant soybean seed.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the protein content of the meal obtained from the transgenic soybean seed is increased by at least 1.5% points compared to the protein content of the second meal.

5. A method for increasing the protein content of a meal obtained from a transgenic soybean seed, the method comprising: preparing meal from seed harvested from a transgenic plant, the transgenic plant comprising at least one recombinant construct comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:10, wherein expression of the recombinant construct in the transgenic soybean seed results in an increased total fatty acid content of the transgenic soybean seed of at least 10% when compared to the total fatty acid content of a non-transgenic, null segregant soybean seed, wherein the percentage of fatty acids that are represented by linoleic acids is decreased, and wherein the protein content of the meal obtained from the transgenic soybean seed is increased when compared to the protein content of a second meal obtained from the non-transgenic, null segregant soybean seed.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the protein content of the meal obtained from the transgenic soybean seed is increased by at least 1.5% compared to the protein content of the second meal.
