Abstract

The present invention relates to methods of separating, supporting or both separating and supporting layers of tissue in the human spine. Such methods generally comprise inserting at least one member between layers of tissue in the human spine and changing the configuration of the member to define a support structure between the tissue layers.

12. The device of claim 1 in which the implant, relative to the implanted helical configuration, includes a top surface, a bottom surface, a radially inner facing surface and a radially outer facing surface, the slots extending through at least the radially inner facing surface, and being in flow communication with the passageway, whereby flowable bone filling material may be flowed through the passageway and slots and into a region radially inwardly of the helical structure.

13. The device of claim 12 in which the flowable material includes a bone filler material.

14. The device of claim 12 wherein the bone filler material is bone cement, allograph material, autograph material, a therapeutic drug or agent or other biocompatible material.

15. A method for treating a vertebral body having an interior region defined by a generally annular cortical wall and upper and lower endplates, the method comprising:

introducing a generally elongated intravertebral implant in a generally linear insertion configuration through the cortical wall and into the interior region of the vertebral body, the generally elongated implant having a passageway extending longitudinally through the elongated implant and a plurality of slots spaced apart along the elongated implant; and

changing the configuration of the elongated implant to form a generally vertically extending helical configuration within the interior region of the vertebral body, the helical configuration extent sufficient to separate, support or separate and support the upper and lower endplates and including a plurality of vertically adjacent windings with at least one of the windings contacting an immediately adjacent winding, the at least one winding and immediately adjacent winding being configured to for contact that assists in maintaining the elongated implant in the helical configuration.

16. The method of claim 15 in which the at least one and immediately adjacent windings are configured for contact that resists lateral shifting of such windings relative to each other.

17. The method of claim 15 in which the contact between the at least one and immediately adjacent windings includes interfering surfaces between the windings.

18. The method of claim 15 in which the at least one and immediately adjacent windings have engaging shoulders that resist lateral displacement of such windings relative to one another.

19. The method of claim 15 in which, the at least one and immediately adjacent windings have engaging convex and concave surfaces that assist in maintaining the implant in a helical configuration.

20. The method of claim 15 in which each of the at least one and immediately adjacent windings has an upper surface and a lower surface configured so that the upper surface of one winding contacts the lower surface the adjacent winding in the helical configuration to resist relative lateral displacement.

21. The method of claim 20 in which one of the upper and lower surfaces include convex portions and the other of the upper and lower surfaces includes cooperating concave portions.

22. The method of claim 20 wherein the upper surface of one of such windings includes an elongated rib extending therealong and the lower surface of the other of such windings includes an elongated slot for receiving the rib, contact between the rib and slot resisting lateral displacement of one winding relative to the other.

23. The method of claim 15 in which the implant has a double round cross-sectional shape.

24. The method of claim 15 in which the implant has a cross-sectional shape including a square profile portion and round profile portion.

25. The method of claim 15 wherein immediately adjacent windings are locked together to resist relative lateral shifting.
