Abstract

Methods and systems for optimizing bandwidth utilization in an in-home network may include determining usage and/or quality of communication links operating in accordance with first and second communication protocols in a multi-protocol wired and wireless network. Data communication may be routed from a first communication link operating in accordance with the first communication protocol to a second communication link operating in accordance with the second communication protocol, based on the determining. The first communication protocol may include a wired communication standard and the second communication protocol may include a wireless communication standard. The determining and routing may be performed by a network controller. The rerouting may increase bandwidth usage efficiency and/or data throughput of the network. The determining and rerouting may be performed dynamically.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said determining and said routing are performed dynamically.

7. A system for multimedia communication, the system comprising:

one or more circuits for use in a multi-protocol premises-based wired and wireless network, said one or more circuits being operable to:

determine one or both of a usage and a quality of a first communication link operating in accordance with a first communication protocol comprising a Multimedia over Cable Alliance (MoCA) standard and a second communication link operating in accordance with a second communication protocol comprising one or more of a wireless local area network standard, Ethernet, and Home Phoneline Alliance (HPNA), in said multi-protocol wired and wireless network;

route some or all data communications from said first communication link operating in accordance with said first communication protocol to said second communication link operating in accordance with said second communication protocol, based on said determining; and

configure a bit-loading of said data communications in said first communication link and a bit-loading of said data communications in said second communication link based on said determining.

8. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said determining is performed by one or more Multimedia over Cable Alliance (MoCA) network controllers.

9. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said routing is performed by one or more Multimedia over Cable Alliance (MoCA) network controllers.

10. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to increase bandwidth usage efficiency of said multi-protocol wired and wireless network by the routing.

11. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said one or more circuits are operable to increase data throughput of said multi-protocol wired and wireless network by the routing.

12. A system for multimedia communication, the system comprising:

a Multimedia over Cable Alliance (MoCA) network controller in a premises, said MoCA network controller being operable to:

determine one or both of a usage and a quality of a first communication link operating in accordance with a first communication protocol comprising a Multimedia over Cable Alliance (MoCA) standard and a second communication link operating in accordance with a second communication protocol comprising one or more of a wireless local area network standard, Ethernet, and Home Phoneline Alliance (HPNA), in a multi-protocol wired and wireless network within said premises;

route some or all data communications from said first communication link operating in accordance with said first communication protocol to said second communication link operating in accordance with said second communication protocol, based on said determining; and

configure a bit-loading of said data communications in said first communication link and a bit-loading of said data communications in said second communication link based on said determining.

13. A method for multimedia communication, the method comprising:

in a multi-protocol premises-based wired and wireless network:

determining one or both of a usage and a quality of a first communication link operating in accordance with a first communication protocol comprising a wireless local area network standard and a second communication link operating in accordance with a second communication protocol comprising a Multimedia over Cable Alliance (MoCA) standard, in said multi-protocol wired and wireless network;

routing some or all data communications from said first communication link operating in accordance with said first communication protocol to said second communication link operating in accordance with said second communication protocol, based on said determining; and

configuring a bit-loading of said data communications in said first communication link and a bit-loading of said data communications in said second communication link based on said determining.
