Abstract

A transverse connector of a stabilizing system for correcting a spinal deformity includes a mounting portion adapted to be secured to a vertebra, a head portion having a pocket for receiving a spinal rod, a connection portion extending between the mounting portion and the head portion, and an arm portion extending from the mounting portion to a terminal end. The arm portion is substantially elongate in shape and is adapted to extend laterally across a vertebra of a spine. A flexible tether is secured to the terminal end of the arm portion.

Claims (27)

1. A transverse connector of a stabilizing system for correcting a spinal deformity, the transverse connector comprising:

a mounting portion adapted to be secured to a vertebra, the mounting portion having an aperture, the aperture defining a first axis;

a head portion having a pocket for receiving a spinal rod, the pocket defining a second axis;

an arm portion extending from the mounting portion to a terminal end in a first direction opposite from the head portion, the arm portion being substantially elongate in shape and adapted to extend laterally across a vertebra of a spine;

a flexible tether secured to the terminal end of the arm portion; and

a connection portion extending in a second direction between the mounting portion and the head portion such that the second axis is laterally offset relative to the first axis,

wherein the connection portion extends between the mounting portion and the head portion at an acute angle relative to the first direction.

2. The transverse connector of claim 1 , wherein the mounting portion has an aperture for receiving a pedicle screw for securing the mounting portion to a vertebra.

3. The transverse connector of claim 2 , wherein the aperture is an elongate slot.

4. The transverse connector of claim 1 , wherein the head portion is substantially U-shaped, including a first prong and a second prong defining the pocket for receiving the spinal rod.

5. The transverse connector of claim 4 , wherein the first and second prongs are threaded for receiving a clamping screw adapted to secure the spinal rod in the pocket.

6. The transverse connector of claim 1 , wherein the connection portion extends between the mounting portion and the head portion at an angle of about 45 degrees relative to the first direction.

7. The transverse connector of claim 1 , wherein the terminal end forms a polyaxial connection with the flexible tether.

8. The transverse connector of claim 1 , wherein the terminal end is threaded.

9. The transverse connector of claim 1 , wherein the arm portion is adapted to extend laterally from one side of a spine to an opposite side of the spine.

10. The transverse connector of claim 1 , wherein the mounting portion, the head portion, the connection portion and the arm portion are formed as a single, monolithic piece.

11. The transverse connector of claim 1 , wherein the first axis and the second axis are parallel.

12. A stabilizing system for correcting a spinal deformity, the stabilizing system comprising:

first and second spinal rods;

a transverse connector including:

a mounting portion adapted to be secured to a vertebra, the mounting portion having an aperture defining a first axis;

a head portion having a pocket that receives the first spinal rod, the pocket configured to be disposed on a first side of a spine and defining a second axis;

an arm portion extending from the mounting portion in a first direction, the arm portion being substantially elongate in shape and adapted to extend laterally across a vertebra of the spine;

a flexible tether adapted to be secured to the arm portion; and

a connection portion extending in a second direction between the mounting portion and the head portion such that the second axis is laterally offset relative to the first axis, wherein the connection portion extends between the mounting portion and the head portion at an acute angle relative to the first direction; and

a tensioner adapted to adjust an effective length of the flexible tether between the transverse connector and the tensioner, the tensioner configured to be disposed on an opposed second side of the spine and having a lumen that slidably receives the second rod.

13. The transverse connector of claim 12 , wherein the first axis and the second axis are parallel.
