Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for connecting a caller to an alternate telephone number, such as 911, when a call to a private response center does not result in immediate assistance. In one example, when the call to the private response center does not connect, the communications device used to make the call may prompt the user to indicate that the call relates to an emergency, and the communications device may call the emergency services telephone number. Failure to connect may result when the call does not connect to a receiving party, or upon failure to timely reach a customer service representative. The communications device may prompt the user to indicate whether an alternate telephone number should be called.

Claims (52)

1. A communications device, comprising:

an input interface;

a transceiver;

a microprocessor; and

a computer readable memory, the computer readable memory holding microprocessor instructions that, when executed by the microprocessor, cause the communications device to:

receive an input via the input interface;

in response to the input, place an outgoing call to a telephone number that is not an emergency services telephone number;

start a timer; and

monitor incoming messages for a confirmatory electronic message confirming that the outgoing call was answered by the intended recipient;

and upon expiration of the timer without receipt of a confirmatory message:

recognize that the outgoing call failed to complete;

recognize a particular state indicating that a second outgoing call is to be placed to a second telephone number; and

place the second outgoing call to the second telephone number.

2. The communications device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the instructions further configure the communications device to:

receive a second input via the input interface;

in response to the second input, place a third outgoing call;

start the timer;

monitor incoming messages for a confirmatory electronic message confirming that the third outgoing call was answered by the intended recipient;

receive a confirmatory message; and

in response to the receipt of the confirmatory message, forego placing of an additional outgoing telephone call.

3. The communications device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the timer measures a predetermined time interval.

4. The communications device as recited in claim 3 , wherein the predetermined time interval is two minutes or less.

5. The communications device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the communications device monitors incoming messages for a text-based confirmatory message confirming that the outgoing call was answered by the intended recipient.

6. The communications device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the communications device monitors incoming messages for a short message service confirmatory message confirming that the outgoing call was answered by the intended recipient.

7. The communications device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the communications device monitors incoming messages for an incoming telephone call confirming that the outgoing call was answered by the intended recipient.

8. The communications device as recited in claim 7 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the microprocessor, cause the communications device to detect in incoming telephone call confirming that the outgoing call was answered by the intended recipient, and to recognize an originating telephone number from which the incoming telephone call originates.

9. The communications device as recited in claim 1 wherein the second telephone number is an emergency services telephone number.

10. The communications device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the communications device is a wireless telephone.

11. The communications device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the input interface comprises one and only one button.

12. A method of operating a communications device, the method comprising:

receiving, via an input interface of the communications device, an input from a user of the communications device;

in response to the input, under control of a processor comprised in the communications device, placing an outgoing call to a telephone number that is not an emergency services telephone number;

starting a timer; and

monitoring incoming messages for a confirmatory electronic message confirming that the outgoing call was answered by an intended recipient

and upon expiration of the timer without receipt of a confirmatory message:

recognizing that the outgoing call failed to complete;

recognizing a particular state of the communications device, the state indicating that a second telephone number is to be called; and

after recognition of the particular state, placing a second outgoing call to the second telephone number using the transceiver.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

receiving, via the input interface of the communications device, a second input from a user of the communications device;

in response to the second input, under control of the processor comprised in the communications device, placing a third outgoing call;

starting the timer; and

monitoring incoming messages for a confirmatory electronic message confirming that the third outgoing call was answered by an intended recipient;

receiving a confirmatory message; and

in response to the receipt of the confirmatory message, foregoing placing of an additional outgoing telephone call.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

detecting an incoming telephone call confirming that the third outgoing call was answered by the intended recipient; and

recognizing an originating telephone number from which the incoming telephone call originated.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the timer measures a predetermined time interval.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein monitoring incoming messages for a confirmatory message corresponding to the outgoing call comprises monitoring for a text-based message.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein monitoring incoming messages for a confirmatory message corresponding to the outgoing call comprises monitoring for an incoming telephone call.

18. The method of operating a communications device as recited in claim 12 , wherein the second telephone number is an emergency services telephone number.
