Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods, compositions and tools for repairing articular surfaces repair materials and for repairing an articular surface. The articular surface repairs are customizable or highly selectable by patient and geared toward providing optimal fit and function. The surgical tools are designed to be customizable or highly selectable by patient to increase the speed, accuracy and simplicity of performing total or partial arthroplasty.

Claims (31)

1. A surgical tool for use in surgery on a joint of a patient, comprising:

a first portion having a patient-specific surface and a second portion having a guide to direct or accommodate a surgical instrument;

wherein the patient-specific surface is substantially a negative of a corresponding surface of the joint;

wherein the guide is configured relative to the patient-specific surface to define a predetermined path for the surgical instrument that is aligned through a portion of tissue associated with the joint when the patient specific surface is placed against and aligned with the corresponding surface; and

wherein the path for the surgical instrument provides a desired anteversion or retroversion of at least one implant component for the joint,

wherein the joint is a shoulder joint of the patient.

2. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the at least one implant component includes a humeral implant component.

3. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the at least one implant component includes a glenoid implant component.

4. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the corresponding surface includes at least a portion of a glenoid rim of the shoulder joint.

5. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the corresponding surface includes at least a portion of a humeral neck of the shoulder joint.

6. A system for use in surgery on a joint of a patient including a surgical tool of claim 1 and one or more implant components selected from pre-existing implant components and/or designed for the patient.

7. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the corresponding surface of the joint includes cartilage.

8. The surgical tool of claim 7 , wherein the corresponding surface of the joint includes normal or diseased cartilage, or both.

9. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the corresponding surface of the joint includes a cortical bone surface of the joint.

10. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the corresponding surface of the joint includes a subchondral bone surface of the joint.

11. A surgical system for use in surgery on a joint of a patient, comprising:

one or more implant components and a surgical tool, said surgical tool comprising:

a first portion having a patient-specific surface and a second portion having a guide to direct or accommodate a surgical instrument;

wherein the patient-specific surface is substantially a negative of a corresponding surface of the joint;

wherein the guide is configured relative to the patient-specific surface to define a predetermined path for the surgical instrument that is aligned through a portion of tissue associated with the joint when the patient specific surface is placed against and aligned with the corresponding surface; and

wherein the path for the surgical instrument provides a desired rotational position of at least one implant component,

wherein the joint is a shoulder joint of the patient.

12. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the implant component includes a humeral implant component.

13. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the implant component includes a glenoid implant component.

14. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the corresponding surface includes at least a portion of a glenoid rim of the shoulder joint.

15. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the corresponding surface includes at least a portion of a humeral neck of the shoulder joint.

16. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the corresponding surface of the joint includes cartilage.

17. The surgical system of claim 16 , wherein the corresponding surface of the joint includes normal or diseased cartilage, or both.

18. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the corresponding surface of the joint includes a cortical bone surface of the joint.

19. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the corresponding surface of the joint includes a subchondral bone surface of the joint.

20. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more implant components are selected from pre-existing implant components and/or designed for the patient.
