Abstract

An electrical connector forms electrical contact by tightening a movable, electrically-conductive spiral around un-insulated wire(s). The spiral coils around the wire(s) multiple times and tightens on the wire(s) when either one or the other end, or both ends, of the spiral is/are rotated relative to the other. One region of the spiral is preferably fixed to an insulating housing or otherwise retained from movement in the housing, while another region of the spiral is rotated and latched to retain the spiral in the tightened condition. Multiple spirals may be provided in one connector, including spirals that tighten around separate wires at opposite ends/side of the connector. Modular connectors that include spiral(s) may be assembled in multiple combinations.

Claims (30)

1. A connector for electrically-conductive wire ends, the connector comprising:

an electrically-conductive spiral unit having a first end, a central portion, and a second end, the spiral unit being twistable from a relaxed configuration having a relaxed diameter to a tightened configuration having a tightened diameter that is smaller than the relaxed diameter;

an electrically-insulating housing adapted to receive electrically-conductive wire ends extending into the spiral unit, the housing comprising a first housing portion fixed to said first end of the spiral unit, and a second housing portion fixed to said second end of the spiral unit;

wherein said first housing portion is rotatable, in a first direction relative to said second housing portion, from an unlatched position wherein the spiral unit is in said relaxed configuration, to a latched position wherein the spiral unit is twisted into said tightened configuration and squeezes said multiple wire ends into electrical-connection with the spiral unit so that said wire ends are in electrical-connection with each other; and

wherein, in the latched position, the first housing portion is prevented from rotating in an opposite direction relative to the second housing portion to relax the spiral.

2. A connector as in claim 1 , wherein the first housing portion in the latched position is latched to the second housing portion by a ratcheting latch mechanism.

A connector as in claim 1 , further comprising a central housing portion, between said first housing portion and said second housing portion, that covers and is fixed to the central portion of the spiral unit, wherein the first housing portion, when rotating relative to said second housing portion, also rotates relative to said central housing portion, and the connector further comprising a first ratcheting latch mechanism that latches the first housing portion in the latched position to the central housing portion, and a second ratcheting latch mechanism that latches the second housing portion to the central housing portion to retain the spiral unit is the tightened configuration.

4. A connector as in claim 3 , further comprising seals for liquid-sealing the first housing portion to the central housing portion and the second housing portion to the central housing portion.

A connector as in claim 3 , wherein each of said first housing portion and said second housing portion has a passageway that mechanically communicates with an interior passageway of the spiral unit and the passageways have openings at opposite outer ends of the connector, for insertion of the wire ends into the connector through the openings at the outer ends of the connector and into the spiral unit, and wherein the connector further comprises a cover over each of said openings.

6. A connector for electrically-conductive wire ends, the connector comprising:

an electrically-conductive spiral unit having a first end and a second end, the spiral unit being twistable from a relaxed configuration having a relaxed diameter, to a tightened configuration having a tightened diameter that is smaller than the relaxed diameter;

an electrically-insulating housing comprising a first housing portion fixed to said first end of the spiral unit, and a second housing portion fixed to said second end of the spiral unit, wherein the first housing portion has an opening in communication with an interior passageway of the spiral unit for receiving electrically-conductive wire ends extending into the spiral unit;

wherein said first housing portion is rotatable, in a first direction relative to said second housing portion, from an unlatched position wherein the spiral unit is in said relaxed configuration, to a latched position wherein the spiral unit is in said tightened configuration and squeezes said multiple wire ends into electrical-connection with the spiral unit so that said wire ends are in electrical-connection with each other; and

wherein, in the latched position, the first housing portion is fixed in position relative to the second housing portion and prevented from rotating in an opposite direction relative to the second housing portion to relax the spiral; and

wherein the second housing portion has a closed outer end so that wires are only inserted into the connector through the first housing portion opening.

7. A connector as in claim 6 , wherein the first housing portion in the latched position is latched to the second housing portion by a ratcheting latch mechanism.

8. A connector as in claim 6 , wherein said first housing portion has two wings extending in opposite directions for assisting a user to rotate the first housing portion relative to the second housing portion.

A connector as in claim 6 , wherein the second housing portion comprises a collar fixed to and encircling said second end of the spiral unit, and the connector further comprises an electrically-conductive terminal end that is electrically-connected to the spiral unit and extends through the collar for access outside of the housing.

A connector as in claim 9 , wherein the terminal end is selected from the group consisting of: an eyelet, fork, a substantially flat member for being bolted or screwed to a conductive surface, a cylindrical female quick-connect/disconnect piece, a cylindrical male quick-connect/disconnect piece, and rectangular-tubular mating members.

11. A modular connector for electrically-conductive wire ends, the connector comprising:

an electrically-conductive spiral unit having a first end and a second end and an interior passageway, the spiral unit being twistable from a relaxed configuration having a relaxed diameter to a tightened configuration having a tightened diameter that is smaller than the relaxed diameter;

a conductive holder tube attached to the second end of the spiral unit and having an internal passageway extending transversely to the spiral unit interior passageway and having open ends;

an electrically-insulating housing comprising a first housing portion surrounding and fixed to said first end of the spiral unit, and a second housing portion surrounding said conductive holder tube and said second end of the spiral unit;

wherein the first housing portion has an opening in communication with the interior passageway of the spiral unit for receiving electrically-conductive wire ends extending into the spiral unit;

wherein said first housing portion is rotatable, in a first direction relative to said second housing portion, from an unlatched position wherein the spiral unit is in said relaxed configuration, to a latched position wherein the spiral unit is in said tightened configuration to squeeze said multiple wire ends into electrical-connection with the spiral unit so that said wire ends are in electrical-connection with each other; and

wherein, in the latched position, the first housing portion is fixed in position relative to the second housing portion and prevented from rotating in an opposite direction relative to the second housing portion to relax the spiral; and

wherein the second housing portion has openings in communication with the open ends of the conductive holder tube so the internal passageway of the conductive holder tube is accessible from outside the connector; and

a conductive dowel received in at least one of said openings in the conductive holder tube for connecting multiple of said connectors in electrical connection.

12. A modular connector as in claim 11 , wherein the conductive holder tube internal passageway is polygonal, and the dowel is polygonal.

13. A modular connector as in claim 11 , wherein the first housing portion in the latched position is latched to the second housing portion by a ratcheting latch mechanism.
