Abstract

The invention includes a substantially rigid body providing underlying support for a filter screen. The invention further includes at least one heating wire disposed adjacent to the body, which is formed of heat conductive material. The body is configured with multiple ribs extending up from a floor so that heat transfer from the body to the screen can occur in a variety of different locations to keep the screen sufficiently heated. The body also includes a wing for interfacing with roofing and openings to allow water filtering through the screen to migrate down into the gutter. A cover overlies a channel, which contains one or more of the heating wires. The system includes a flange attached to the body and extends into the gutter enhancing the heat transfer from the body to within the gutter to keep the water flowing in gutter.

Claims (36)

1. A de-icing gutter debris preclusion system comprising in combination:

a substantially rigid body adapted to be located over a gutter and held in place over the gutter;

the body including a plurality of holes therein adapted to allow water to pass therethrough;

the body formed at least partially of a metallic heat conducting material;

a filter element supported above and in heat transfer facilitating contact with the body;

the filter element formed of a metallic at least somewhat heat conducting material;

a heat source located adjacent the rigid body, the heat source adapted to conduct heat from the heat source, through the rigid body to the filter element sufficient to elevate a temperature of the filter element;

a flange is coupled to an underside of the body, the flange formed of heat conductive material, the flange having sufficient length to extend to a lower portion of the gutter and contact the gutter to transfer heat to the lower portion of the gutter;

wherein the body includes heat transfer ribs extending up from a heat conductive floor, the floor including at least some of the plurality of holes therein for passage of water through the body, the filter element located in contact with the ribs at tips of the ribs opposite the floor; and,

wherein the tips of the ribs are located in a common plane with the filter element, the filter element adapted to be oriented in a substantially planar form;

wherein slots are provided in the body in a plane common with the tips of the ribs, the slots including an upper slot on one side of the ribs and a lower slot on another side of the ribs, each of the slots facing each other at least partially, each of the slots adapted to receive edges of the filter element therein, the filter element captured within the slots both to hold the filter element adjacent the body and to allow heat transfer between the filter element and the body;

wherein substantially planar shelves are provided between the slots and the ribs, the shelves adapted to be in contact with the filter element and support the filter element in a plane common with the tips of the ribs on sides of the body opposite there the ribs are located and adjacent the slots;

wherein a channel is located in the body on a side of the lower slot opposite the ribs and the lower shelf, the channel supporting the heat source therein;

wherein the heat source includes wire and experiences resistance heating when electric power is applied to the wire, the wire located within the channel and in contact with walls of the channel, the walls of the channel formed integrally with other portions of the body including the ribs, the shelves and the slots for heat transfer between the wire and the filter element where the filter element is in contact with the rib tips, the shelves and the slots;

wherein a cover overlies the channel, the cover formed of heat conducting metallic material; and

wherein a fastener hole is located in the cover, a fastener provided sized to pass through the fastener hole in the cover, the body including a mounting hole therein located below the fastener hole in the cover when the cover is located over the channel, the fastener hole in the cover and the mounting hole both located adjacent a lip of the gutter when the body is located adjacent the gutter, the fastener adapted to hold the cover to the body and both the cover and the body to the gutter when the fastener passes through the fastener hole in the cover, the mounting hole in the body and into fastening engagement with the gutter.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the holes in the floor are elongate in form and located between the ribs extending up from the floor.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein space is provided between adjacent holes, that are positioned between common ribs, the space having a length of at least one-fourth of a length of the holes in the floor.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the spaces are staggered on opposite sides of the ribs such that the holes are not aligned.

5. The system of claim 3 wherein the spaces are aligned on opposite sides of the ribs, such that spaces on opposite sides of the ribs provide substantially straight heat conducting pathways extending from the channel containing the heat source therein.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein a channel is located in the body on a side of the lower slot opposite the ribs and the lower shelf, the channel supporting the heat source therein.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heat source includes wire that experiences resistance heating when electric power is applied to the wire, the wire located within the channel and in contact with walls of the channel, the walls of the channel formed integrally with other portions of the body including the ribs, the shelves and the slots for heat transfer between the wire and the filter element where the filter element is in contact with the rib tips, the shelves and the slots.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein a cover overlies the channel, the cover formed of heat conducting metallic material.

9. A de-icing gutter debris preclusion system comprising:

a body adapted to be located over a gutter and held in place over the gutter, the body includes a plurality of holes therein and a channel, wherein the body is formed at least partially of a metallic heat conducting material;

a filter element supported above and in heat transfer facilitating contact with the body, the filter element is formed at least partially of a heat conducting material;

a heat source located substantially within the channel, the heat source adapted to conduct heat from the heat source, through the body to the filter element sufficient to elevate a temperature of the filter element;

a cover being removable attached to the body to overly the channel; and,

a flange being attached to an underside of the body, the flange being formed of heat conductive material, and wherein the flange includes a sufficient length to extend to a lower portion of the gutter and wherein the flange does not touch the gutter.

10. A de-icing gutter debris preclusion system, as recited in claim 9 , wherein the flange further includes a foot.

11. A de-icing gutter debris preclusion device comprising:

a body adapted to be located over a gutter and held in place over the gutter, the body includes a plurality of holes therein and a channel, wherein the body is formed at least partially of a metallic heat conducting material;

a filter element supported above and in heat transfer facilitating contact with the body, the filter element is formed at least partially of a heat conducting material;

a heat source located substantially within the channel, the heat source adapted to conduct heat from the heat source, through the body to the filter element sufficient to elevate a temperature of the filter element; and,
