Abstract

A computer implemented method enables perception of multiple online personas in an instant messaging communications session by identifying at least two identities within a communications environment to whom messages may be directed, and by enabling a first persona of a user to be projected to a first of the identities while concurrently enabling a second persona of the same user to be projected to a second of the identities.

Claims (78)

1. A method for enabling projection of multiple personas over an instant messaging platform, the method comprising:

identifying, using a processor, a single textual identifier for a user, the single textual identifier used to represent the user in an instant messaging communication environment;

identifying a plurality of the user's buddies, wherein the instant messaging communications environment is configured to allow communication between the user and the user's buddies through one or more instant messaging communications sessions;

associating a first persona and a second persona with the single textual identifier of the user;

associating an attribute of the first persona with a first functionality;

associating an attribute of the second persona with a second functionality, the second functionality differing from the first functionality;

determining, based a set of criteria, whether to project one or more of the first persona and the second persona in a first instant messaging communications session; and

based on the determining, projecting, to at least one of the user's buddies, the single textual identifier and one of the group consisting of the first persona, the second persona, and a combination of the first persona and the second persona, in the first instant messaging communications session.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

when the determining determines that the first persona and the second persona should be projected in the user interface for the first instant messaging communications session, identifying a conflict between the first persona and the second persona;

resolving the identified conflict by generating a combination persona for the first persona and the second persona based on a plurality of conflict resolution rules; and

projecting the combination persona in the first instant messaging communications session.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein generating the combination persona for the first persona and the second persona based on a plurality of conflict resolution rules comprises determining that the attribute of the first persona overrides the attribute of the second persona.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first functionality comprises encrypting messages sent by the user during the first instant messaging communications session.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the first functionality comprises decrypting messages received by the user during the first instant messaging communications session.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first functionality comprises logging messages sent and received by the user during the first instant messaging communications session.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the first functionality further comprises providing a notification concerning the message logging by the user to the first user's buddy.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the first functionality comprises routing a message received by the user during the first instant messaging communications session.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein routing a message received by the user during the first instant messaging communications session comprises routing of the message over a communications mode other than the communications mode over which the message was received.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein routing the message over a communication mode other than the communications mode over which the message was received comprises forwarding the message to a different user.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein routing the message over a communication mode other than the communications mode over which the message was received comprises forwarding the message via e-mail.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein the first functionality further comprises providing a notification concerning the message routing to the first user's buddy.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining the routing, wherein determining the routing comprises determining the routing based upon an online presence state of the single textual identifier.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the first persona and the second persona each include at least one shared functionality.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

associating the first persona with a first group of the user's buddies such that the first persona is projected to members of the first group of the user's buddies in a communications session.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

associating the second persona with a second group of the user's buddies such that the second persona is projected to members of the second group of the user's buddies in a communications session.

17. A system for enabling projection of multiple personas over an instant messaging platform, the system comprising:

a storage device that stores a plurality of instructions; and

at least one processor configured to execute the plurality of instructions to:

identify a single textual identifier for a user, the single textual identifier used to represent the user in an instant messaging communication environment;

identify a plurality of the user's buddies, wherein the instant messaging communications environment is configured to allow communication between the user and the user's buddies through one or more instant messaging communications sessions;

associate a first persona and a second persona with the single textual identifier of the user;

associate an attribute of the first persona with a first functionality;

associate an attribute of the second persona with a second functionality, the second functionality differing from the first functionality;

determine, based a set of criteria, whether to project one or more of the first persona and the second persona in a first instant messaging communications session; and

based on the determining, project, to at least one of the user's buddies, the single textual identifier and one of the group consisting of the first persona, the second persona, and a combination of the first persona and the second persona, in the first instant messaging communications session.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the plurality of instructions comprises instructions that cause the at least one processor to:

when it is determined that the first persona and the second persona should be projected in the user interface for the first instant messaging communications session,

identify a conflict between the first persona and the second persona;

resolve the identified conflict by generating a combination persona for the first persona and the second persona based on a plurality of conflict resolution rules; and

project the combination persona in the first instant messaging communications session.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein generating the combination persona for the first persona and the second persona based on a plurality of conflict resolution rules comprises determining that the attribute of the first persona overrides the attribute of the second persona.

20. The system of claim 17 wherein the first functionality comprises encrypting messages sent by the user during the first instant messaging communications session.

21. The system of claim 17 wherein the first functionality comprises decrypting messages received by the user during the first instant messaging communications session.

22. The system of claim 17 wherein the first functionality comprises logging messages sent and received by the user during the first instant messaging communications session.

23. The system of claim 17 wherein the first functionality comprises routing a message received by the user during the first instant messaging communications session.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the plurality of instructions further comprise instructions that cause the at least one processor to:

determine the routing based upon an online presence state of the single textual identifier.

25. The system of claim 17 wherein the first persona and the second persona each include at least one shared functionality.

26. The system of claim 17 wherein the plurality of instructions comprise instructions that cause the at least one processor to:

associate the first persona with a first group of the user's buddies such that the first persona is projected to members of the first group of the user's buddies in a communications session.

27. The system of claim 17 wherein the plurality of instructions comprise instructions that cause the at least one processor to:

associate the second persona with a second group of the user's buddies such that the second persona is projected to members of the second group of the user's buddies in a communications session.
