Abstract

An expandable arrowhead having a blade-carrying body with a slot that houses at least one movably mounted blade. Each blade can be pivotally mounted about a shaft. In some embodiments, the shaft is fixed with respect to the body. In other embodiments, the shaft is movably mounted with respect to the body, for example by mounting a shaft within the slot so that the shaft moves within the slot with respect to the blade-carrying body. In some embodiments of this invention, a spring element positively holds one or more blades in a closed position or a retracted position, particularly during extreme forces encountered when launching an arrow from an archery bow, such as a compound archery bow. The spring element of this invention can be used to improve blade opening capabilities of conventional blade-opening arrowheads or broadheads.

Claims (25)

1. In an expandable arrowhead having a blade movable between a retracted position and an expanded position, including a blade-carrying body having a slot, at least a portion of said blade movably mounted within said slot, said blade having an opening, a shaft mounted within said opening, and said blade pivoting and translating with respect to said blade-carrying body when moving between said retracted position and said expanded position, the improvement comprising: a spring element releasably holding said blade into said retracted position, said spring element having a contact portion interfering with movement of said blade and said spring element having a lock tab mounting said spring element with respect to said blade.

2. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 1 , wherein said spring element has a bias force acting upon and urging said blade into said retracted position.

3. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 2 , wherein said bias force is sized to be overcome by an impact force acting upon and moving said blade from said retracted position to said expanded position.

4. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 1 , wherein said spring element has an opening and said shaft passes through said opening.

5. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 4 , wherein said opening is a circular bore.

6. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 4 , wherein said opening is a non-circular bore.

7. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 4 , wherein said spring element contacts said shaft at said opening and said lock tab contacts said blade to move said spring element with said blade as said blade pivots and translates with respect to said blade-carrying body.

8. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 7 , wherein said detent is engageably mounted within a blade opening of said blade.

9. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 1 , wherein said spring element further comprises a detent contacting said blade in said retracted position.

10. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 1 , wherein said blade has an impact portion and a cutting portion, at least a portion of said blade is movably mounted within said slot, and said impact portion and said cutting portion are on opposite sides of said slot.

11. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 1 , wherein said blade has an impact portion and a cutting portion, at least a portion of said blade is movably mounted within said slot, and said impact portion and said cutting portion are on opposite sides of a longitudinal axis of said blade-carrying body.

12. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 1 , further comprising a second blade having a second impact portion and a second cutting portion, at least a portion of said second blade movably mounted within said slot, and said second impact portion and said second cutting portion on opposite sides of said first slot.

13. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 12 , wherein a force applied to said impact portion and/or said second impact portion overcomes a bias force of said spring element and moves said blade and/or said second blade from said retracted position and into an expanded position.

14. In an expandable arrowhead having a blade movable between a retracted position and an expanded position, including a blade-carrying body having a slot, at least a portion of said blade movably mounted within said slot, said blade having an opening, a shaft mounted within said opening, and said blade pivoting and translating with respect to said blade-carrying body when moving between said retracted position and said expanded position, the improvement comprising: a spring element releasably holding said blade into said retracted position, said blade following a pivoting and translating movement path when moving between said retracted position and said expanded position, and said spring element having a contact portion interfering with said blade along at least a portion of said pivoting and translating movement path of said blade with respect to said blade-carrying body, wherein as said blade moves along said pivoting and translating movement path between said retracted position and said expanded position a distance is varied between a shaft axis of said shaft and a contact area between said contact portion and said blade.

15. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 14 , wherein said spring element has a bias force acting upon and urging said blade into said retracted position.

16. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 15 , wherein said bias force is sized to be overcome by an impact force acting upon and moving said blade from said retracted position to said expanded position.

17. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 14 , wherein said blade has an impact portion and a cutting portion, at least a portion of said blade is movably mounted within said slot, and said impact portion and said cutting portion are on opposite sides of said slot.

18. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 14 , wherein said blade has an impact portion and a cutting portion, at least a portion of said blade is movably mounted within said slot, and said impact portion and said cutting portion are on opposite sides of a longitudinal axis of said blade-carrying body.

19. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 14 , further comprising a second blade having a second impact portion and a second cutting portion, at least a portion of said second blade movably mounted within said slot, and said second impact portion and said second cutting portion on opposite sides of said first slot.

20. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 19 , wherein a force applied to said impact portion and/or said second impact portion overcomes a bias force of said spring element and moves said blade and/or said second blade from said retracted position and into an expanded position.

21. In an expandable arrowhead having a blade movable between a retracted position and an expanded position, including a blade-carrying body having a slot, at least a portion of said blade movably mounted within said slot, said blade having an opening, a shaft mounted within said opening, and said blade pivoting and translating with respect to said blade-carrying body when moving between said retracted position and said expanded position, the improvement comprising: a spring element releasably holding said blade into said retracted position, said blade following a pivoting and translating movement path when moving between said retracted position and said expanded position, and said spring element having a contact portion interfering with said blade along at least a portion of said pivoting and translating movement path of said blade with respect to said blade-carrying body, wherein said spring element has an opening and said shaft passes through said opening.

22. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 21 , wherein as said blade moves along said pivoting and translating movement path between said retracted position and said expanded position a distance is varied between a shaft axis of said shaft and a contact area between said contact portion and said blade.

23. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 21 , wherein said spring element contacts said shaft at said opening and said spring element has a lock surface engageable with said blade-carrying body to prevent movement of said spring element with respect to said blade-carrying body as said blade follows said pivoting and translating movement path.

24. In an expandable arrowhead having a blade movable between a retracted position and an expanded position, including a blade-carrying body having a slot, at least a portion of said blade movably mounted within said slot, said blade having an opening, a shaft mounted within said opening, and said blade pivoting and translating with respect to said blade-carrying body when moving between said retracted position and said expanded position, the improvement comprising: a spring element releasably holding said blade into said retracted position, said blade following a pivoting and translating movement path when moving between said retracted position and said expanded position, and said spring element having a contact portion interfering with said blade along at least a portion of said pivoting and translating movement path of said blade with respect to said blade-carrying body, wherein said spring element further comprises a detent contacting said blade in said retracted position.

25. The expandable arrowhead according to claim 24 , wherein said detent is engageably mounted within a blade opening of said blade.
