Abstract

A ureteral stent is designed to be placed within a patient's ureter to facilitate drainage from the patient's kidneys to the bladder. An elongated portion of the stent includes a length sufficient to extend substantially within the ureter from the kidney to the bladder, and the elongated portion defines a lumen extending therethrough. A retention portion extends from one end of the elongated portion and retains the position of the ureteral stent when placed substantially within the kidney. The retention portion includes an interior space that is in communication with the lumen within the elongated portion and has at least one opening for urine drainage. A flared portion extending from the other end of the elongated portion is positioned within the patient's bladder. The flared portion curves outward and includes an elastic member that maintains the shape of the flared portion when positioned within the bladder.

Claims (27)

1. A ureteral stent, comprising:

an elongated portion defining a longitudinal axis and a lumen;

a retention portion extending from a first end portion of the elongated portion and configured to help retain at least a portion of the ureteral stent in a kidney of a patient;

a flared portion extending from a second end portion of the elongated portion, the flared portion defining a median axis, the flared portion being tilted with respect to the elongated portion such that the median axis of the flared portion forms an acute angle with the longitudinal axis of the elongated portion; and

an elastic member embedded within a sidewall of the flared portion, the elastic member being in a shape of a planar loop, the loop being tilted with respect to the elongated portion, the elastic member being proximally disposed from a distal rim of the flared portion.

2. The ureteral stent of claim 1 , wherein the loop of the elastic member has more than one focal point of curvature.

3. The ureteral stent of claim 1 , wherein the loop of the elastic member forms an oval shape.

4. The ureteral stent of claim 1 , wherein the loop of the elastic member forms an ellipse.

5. The ureteral stent of claim 1 , wherein the distal rim is planar.

6. The ureteral stent of claim 1 , wherein the flared portion is movable from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration.

7. The ureteral sent of claim 1 , wherein the flared portion is movable from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration and from the expanded configuration to the collapsed configuration, the flared portion being biased to the expanded configuration by the elastic member.

8. A ureteral stent, comprising:

an elongated portion defining a lumen;

a retention portion extending from a first end portion of the elongated portion and configured to help retain at least a portion of the ureteral stent in a kidney of a patient;

a flared portion extending from a second end portion of the elongated portion, the flared portion having an expanded configuration and a collapsed configuration, the flared portion having a distal rim, the distal rim being planar, the flared portion being tilted with respect to the elongated portion such that a median axis of the flared portion forms an acute angle with a longitudinal axis of the elongated portion; and

an elastic member coupled to the flared portion and configured to help bias the flared portion to its expanded configuration, the elastic member being in a shape of a planar loop, the loop being tilted with respect to the elongated portion, the planar loop being embedded in a sidewall of the flared portion at a location proximal to the distal rim of the flared portion.

9. The ureteral stent of claim 8 , wherein the loop of the elastic member has more than one focal point of curvature.

10. The ureteral stent of claim 8 , wherein the loop of the elastic member forms an oval shape.

11. The ureteral stent of claim 8 , wherein the loop of the elastic member forms an ellipse.

12. A ureteral stent, comprising:

an elongated portion defining a longitudinal axis and a lumen;

a retention portion extending from a first end portion of the elongated portion and configured to help retain at least a portion of the ureteral stent in a kidney of a patient;

a flared portion extending from a second end portion of the elongated portion, the flared portion defining a median axis, the flared portion being tilted with respect to the elongated portion such that the median axis of the flared portion forms an acute angle with the longitudinal axis of the elongated portion, the flared portion having a planar distal rim; and

an elastic member embedded within a sidewall of the flared portion, the elastic member being in a shape of a planar loop, the loop of the elastic member being tilted with respect to the elongated portion,

the loop of the elastic member being disposed proximally from the distal rim of the flared portion.

13. The ureteral stent of claim 12 , wherein the loop of the elastic member has more than one focal point of curvature.

14. The ureteral stent of claim 12 , wherein the elastic member forms one of an oval and an ellipse.
