Abstract

A method and system optimizes the transmission of a downlink reference signal (DLRS) in a wireless communication system that uses orthogonal division multiple access (OFDMA) for the downlink. Each Node-B (base station) is capable of transmitting the DLRS reference symbols in different subframes of the OFDM radio frame and changing both the number and location of the subframes in response to changing network conditions. The network conditions include the number of terminals being served by the Node-B and multiple access interference (MAI) from adjacent Node-Bs.

Claims (19)

1. A transmission method adapted to a base station in a wireless communications network that uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the base station having multiple antenna ports and transmitting, to a terminal, reference symbols in a radio frame comprising a plurality of subframes, the transmission method comprising:

selecting a pattern from predetermined patterns, and

transmitting reference symbols with at least two subframe reference symbol structures within a radio frame, one of the subframe reference symbol structures is a first subframe reference symbol structure representing a first set of antenna ports and another of the subframe reference symbol structures is a second subframe reference symbol structure representing a second set of antenna ports, wherein

the locations of the subframe(s) for the second subframe reference symbol structure are different in the predetermined patterns, and

the number of antenna ports of the first set is different from the number of antenna ports of the second set.

2. A reception method adapted to a terminal in a wireless communications network that uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the terminal receiving reference symbols in a radio frame comprising a plurality of subframes from a base station which has multiple antenna ports, the reception method comprising:

receiving reference symbols with at least two subframe reference symbol structures within a radio frame, one of the subframe reference symbol structures is a first subframe reference symbol structure representing a first set of antenna ports and another of the subframe reference symbol structures is a second subframe reference symbol structure representing a second set of antenna ports, wherein

the locations of the subframe(s) for the second subframe reference symbol structure are different in predetermined patterns, and

the number of antenna ports of the first set is different from the number of antenna ports of the second set.

3. A base station in a wireless communications network that uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the base station transmitting to a terminal reference symbols in a radio frame comprising a plurality of subframes, the base station comprising:

control unit configured to select a pattern from predetermined patterns;

multiple antenna ports;

a transmitter configured to transmit reference symbols with at least two subframe reference symbol structures within a radio frame, one of the subframe reference symbol structures is a first subframe reference symbol structure representing a first set of antenna ports and another of the subframe reference symbol structures is a second subframe reference symbol structure representing a second set of antenna ports, wherein

the locations of the subframe(s) for the second subframe reference symbol structure are different in the predetermined patterns, and

the number of antenna ports of the first set is different from the number of antenna ports of the second set.

4. A terminal in a wireless communications network that uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the terminal receiving reference symbols in a radio frame comprising a plurality of subframes from a base station which has multiple antenna ports, the terminal comprising:

a receiver that receives reference symbols with at least two subframe reference symbol structures within a radio frame, one of the subframe reference symbol structures is a first subframe reference symbol structure representing a first set of antenna ports and another of the subframe reference symbol structures is a second subframe reference symbol structure representing a second set of antenna ports, wherein

the locations of the subframe(s) for the second subframe reference symbol structure are different in predetermined patterns, and

the number of antenna ports of the first set is different from the number of antenna ports of the second set.
