Providing alternatives within a family tree systems and methods
View Patent ↗A method of creating a family tree includes receiving a request from a user to return a file that includes the family tree and using a plurality of primary source records to construct the family tree based on the request. The records indicate multiple alternatives for at least one branch of the family tree. The method also includes sending a file that includes the family tree to the user. The file includes the alternatives.
1. A method of constructing a family tree, comprising:
indexing a plurality of person records, each person representing a person, by surname, first name, birth date, or other data relevant to the person;
receiving a request from a user to construct and return a file comprising the family tree;
using a plurality of primary source records from one or more external sources to construct the family tree in response to the request, wherein the plurality of primary source records indicate one or more sources of genealogy information related to one or more person records and one or more relationship records identifying relationships between persons;
comparing person records identified as related to one or more persons, wherein the comparing is based on at least one or more of name, birthdate, birth place, death date, death place and other personal characteristics;
based on the comparison of person records, generating one or more scores reflecting the likelihood that two or more of the plurality of person records represent the same person;
after the generation of the one or more scores, comparing relationship records identified as related to one or more persons, wherein the comparing is based on at least one or more of parent, child, spouse, sibling, grandparent, marriage and other personal relationships and event relationships between persons;
based on the comparison of relationship records, revising the generated one or more scores reflecting the likelihood that two or more of the multiple person records represent the same person;
when the revised one or more scores are above a predetermined threshold, consolidating the person records likely representing the same persons into one or more consolidated person records;
sending a file comprising the family tree to the user, wherein the file further comprises the consolidated person records.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein an alternative results from a difference relating to a selection from the group consisting of spelling, place, date, event relationship, ancestor, spouse, and children.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, providing an opportunity for the user to select among the alternatives.
4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:
receiving a selection from among the alternatives from the user;
storing the selection;
using the selection to revise the family tree; and
sending a file comprising the revised family tree to the user.
5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising, using the selection to provide an alternative to another user.
6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising, thereafter receiving a non-contemporaneous request from the user to view the family tree;
using the stored selection to construct the family tree; and
sending a file comprising the family tree to the user, wherein the family tree comprises the revised family tree.
7. The method of claim 4 , further comprising, thereafter, receiving additional genealogy data that creates new alternatives in the family tree; and
notifying the user of the new alternatives.
8. The method of claim 7 , wherein notifying the user comprises sending the user an email.
9. The method of claim 7 , wherein notifying the user comprises sending the user a file comprising the family tree, wherein the file includes a new alternatives symbol.
10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
receiving a request from the user to view the new alternatives;
sending a file to the user comprising the new alternatives;
receiving a selection from among the new alternatives from the user;
using the selection to construct a revised family tree; and
sending a file comprising the revised family tree to the user.
11. A system for constructing a family tree, comprising a processor programmed to:
index a plurality of person records, each person representing a person, by surname, first name, birth date, or other data relevant to the person;
receive a request from a user to construct and return a file comprising the family tree;
use a plurality of primary source records from one or more external sources to construct the family tree in response to the request, wherein the plurality of primary source records indicate one or more sources of genealogy information related to one or more person records and one or more relationship records identifying relationships between persons;
compare person records identified as related to one or more persons, wherein the comparing is based on at least one or more of name, birthdate, birth place, death date, death place and other personal characteristics;
based on the comparison of person records, generate one or more scores reflecting the likelihood that two or more of the plurality of person records represent the same person;
after the generation of the one or more scores, compare relationship records identified as related to one or more persons, wherein the comparing is based on at least one or more of parent, child, spouse, sibling, grandparent, marriage and other personal relationships and event relationships between persons;
based on the comparison of relationship records, revise the generated one or more scores reflecting the likelihood that two or more of the multiple person records represent the same person;
when the revised one or more scores are above a predetermined threshold, consolidate the person records likely representing the same persons into one or more consolidated person records;
send a file comprising the family tree to the user, wherein the file further comprises the consolidated person records.
12. The system of claim 11 , wherein an alternative results from a difference relating to a selection from the group consisting of spelling, place, date, event relationship, ancestor, spouse, and children.
13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further programmed to provide an opportunity for the user to select among the alternatives.
14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor is further programmed to:
receive a selection from among the alternatives from the user;
store the selection;
use the selection to revise the family tree; and
send a file comprising the revised family tree to the user.
15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is further programmed to use the selection to provide an alternative to another user.
16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is further programmed to:
thereafter receive a non-contemporaneous request from the user to view the family tree;
use the stored selection to construct the family tree; and
send a file comprising the family tree to the user, wherein the family tree comprises the revised family tree.
17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is further programmed to:
receive additional genealogy data that creates new alternatives in the family tree; and
notify the user of the new alternatives.
18. The system of claim 17 , wherein in being programmed to notify the user of the new alternatives, the processor is further programmed to send the user an email.
19. The system of claim 18 , wherein in being programmed to notify the user of the new alternatives the processor is further programmed to send the user a file comprising the family tree, wherein the file includes a new alternatives symbol.
20. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon for constructing a family tree which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the processors to perform operations comprising:
indexing a plurality of person records, each person representing a person, by surname, first name, birth date, or other data relevant to the person;
receiving a request from a user to construct and return a file comprising the family tree;
using a plurality of primary source records from one or more external sources to construct the family tree in response to the request, wherein the plurality of primary source records indicate one or more sources of genealogy information related to one or more person records and one or more relationship records identifying relationships between persons;
comparing person records identified as related to one or more persons, wherein the comparing is based on at least one or more of name, birthdate, birth place, death date, death place and other personal characteristics;
based on the comparison of person records, generating one or more scores reflecting the likelihood that two or more of the plurality of person records represent the same person;
after the generation of the one or more scores, comparing relationship records identified as related to one or more persons, wherein the comparing is based on at least one or more of parent, child, spouse, sibling, grandparent, marriage and other personal relationships and event relationships between persons;
based on the comparison of relationship records, revising the generated one or more scores reflecting the likelihood that two or more of the multiple person records represent the same person;
when the revised one or more scores are above a predetermined threshold, consolidating the person records likely representing the same persons into one or more consolidated person records;
sending a file comprising the family tree to the user, wherein the file further comprises the consolidated person records.
