Performing Searching for a List of Entries Using a Remote Control Device
System and method for user interfaces using remote control devices. More specifically, these user interfaces may be particularly useful for providing an intuitive and user friendly interaction between a user and a device or application using a display, e.g., at a “10 foot” interaction level. The user interfaces may be specifically designed for interaction using a simple remote control device having a limited number of inputs. For example, the simple remote control may include directional inputs (e.g., up, down, left, right), a confirmation input (e.g., ok), and possibly a mute input. These user interfaces may allow a user to quickly browse and filter lists of items, efficiently provide input (e.g., having multiple data types), customize directional and/or mute functionality of the remote control, perform camera control (e.g., for videoconferencing), etc.
1 . A method for searching for items in a list of items on a display using a remote control device, the method comprising:
displaying on a first portion of the display at least a portion of an alphabet;
receiving first user input from the remote control device selecting a first letter from the alphabet displayed on the first portion of the display;
displaying on a second portion of the display at least a portion of the list of items which corresponds to the first letter;
receiving second user input from the remote control device indicating acceptance of the first letter;
receiving third user input from the remote control device selecting a second letter from the alphabet displayed on the first portion of the display;
filtering the list of items to identify items in the list having words which begin with the first letter concatenated with the second letter to generate a filtered list of items;
displaying the filtered list of items on the second portion of the display.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
filtering the list of items to identify items in the list having words which begin with the first letter to produce a first filtered list of items; and
displaying the first filtered list of items on the second portion of the display prior to receiving the third user input.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
initially displaying a plurality of items of the list of items on the second portion of the screen;
receiving user input to search the list of items;
wherein said displaying the at least a portion of the alphabet is performed in response to receiving the user input to search the list of items.
4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving fourth user input from the remote control device indicating acceptance of the second letter;
wherein said filtering the list of items is performed after receiving the fourth user input.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said receiving first user input comprises receiving directional input from the remote control.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said receiving second user input from the remote control device indicating acceptance of the first letter comprises user input selecting a confirmation input of the remote control device.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote control is a simple remote control, comprising:
directional inputs for up, down, left, and right; and
confirmation input for confirming a selection;
wherein said receiving the first user input, the second user input, and the third user input only utilizes the directional inputs and the confirmation input.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote control is a simple remote control, wherein the simple remote control comprises no more than 8 inputs.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the list of items comprise a plurality of contacts, wherein the method further comprises:
receiving fourth user input selecting a first item of the filtered list of items, wherein the first item corresponds to a first contact; and
connecting to the first contact in response to the fourth user input.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein said connecting to the first contact comprises establishing a videoconference with at least the first contact, wherein the method further comprises performing the videoconference with the at least first contact.
11 . A non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium storing program instructions for searching for items in a list of items on a display using a remote control device, wherein the program instructions are executable to:
display on a first portion of the display at least a portion of an alphabet;
receive first user input from the remote control device selecting a first letter from the alphabet displayed on the first portion of the display;
display on a second portion of the display at least a portion of the list of items which corresponds to the first letter;
receive second user input from the remote control device indicating acceptance of the first letter;
filter the list of items to identify items in the list having words which begin with the first letter;
display the filtered list of items on the second portion of the display.
12 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 11 , wherein the program instructions are further executable to:
receive third user input from the remote control device selecting a second letter from the alphabet displayed on the first portion of the display;
receive fourth user input from the remote control device indicating acceptance of the second letter;
filter the list of items to identify items in the list having words which begin with the first letter concatenated with the second letter to generate a second filtered list of items, wherein said filtering is performed in response to the third and fourth user input;
display the second filtered list of items on the second portion of the display.
13 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 11 , wherein the program instructions are further executable to:
initially display a plurality of items of the list of items on the second portion of the screen;
receive user input to search the list of items;
wherein said displaying the at least a portion of the alphabet is performed in response to receiving the user input to search the list of items.
14 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 11 , wherein said receiving first user input comprises receiving directional input from the remote control.
15 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 11 , wherein said receiving second user input from the remote control device indicating acceptance of the first letter comprises user input selecting a confirmation input of the remote control device.
16 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 11 , wherein the remote control is a simple remote control, comprising:
directional inputs for up, down, left, and right; and
confirmation input for confirming a selection;
wherein said receiving the first user input and the second user input only utilizes the directional inputs and the confirmation input.
17 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 11 , wherein the remote control is a simple remote control, wherein the simple remote control comprises no more than 8 inputs.
18 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 11 , wherein the list of items comprise a plurality of contacts, wherein the program instructions are further executable to:
receive third user input selecting a first item of the filtered list of items, wherein the first item corresponds to a first contact; and
connect to the first contact in response to the third user input.
19 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 19 , wherein said connecting to the first contact comprises establishing a videoconference with at least the first contact, wherein the method further comprises performing the videoconference with the at least first contact.
20 . A non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium storing program instructions for searching for videoconferencing contacts in a list of contacts on a display using a remote control device, wherein the program instructions are executable to:
display on a first portion of the display at least a portion of an alphabet;
receive first user input from the remote control device selecting a first letter from the alphabet displayed on the first portion of the display;
display on a second portion of the display at least a portion of the list of contacts which corresponds to the first letter;
receive second user input from the remote control device indicating acceptance of the first letter;
filter the list of contacts to identify contacts in the list having words which begin with the first letter;
display the filtered list of contacts on the second portion of the display;
receive third user input selecting a first contact from the filtered list of contacts; and
initiate a videoconference with at least the first contact in response to the third user input.
