Abstract

An electrical connector. An electrical connector a pair of cylindrical housings, one having a plurality of torsion bar conductors and a second having a plurality of ramps. Rotating the pair of housings relative to one another causes an angled tip on the torsion bar to rotate as it moves up the ramp. A land is provided to discontinue further rotation of the torsion bar tip as the housings continue to rotate.

Claims (9)

1. An electrical connector comprising:

a pair of housings rotatable with respect to each other,

a first housing comprising:

a rigid torsion bar conductor, arranged inside the first housing, having two ends and a longitudinal axis,

a first end for connection to a signal; and

a second end formed at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis, the second end being free to rotate about the longitudinal axis thereby inducing torsion in the torsion bar conductor, the second end comprising a tip spaced from said longitudinal axis; and

a second housing comprising:

a receptacle conductor for electrical connection to the rigid torsion bar, the receptacle conductor having two sections, a ramp section and a curved surface section, the receptacle conductor further arranged to engage said tip only in said ramp section upon mating of the first housing with respect to the second housing and, upon rotation of the first housing with respect to the second housing about a housing axis of rotation, to rotate said second end about said longitudinal axis of the rigid torsion bar conductor, the tip moving from said ramp section to curved surface said section upon continued rotation, an engagement surface of said curved surface section having a radius substantially equal to the distance between the engagement surface and the housing axis of rotation whereby said second end stops rotation about the longitudinal axis of the rigid torsion bar conductor while the tip engages the curved surface section.

2. The electrical connector of claim 1 wherein electrical connector comprises a plurality of rigid torsion bar conductors arranged in a cylinder.
