Abstract

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving, from a touch sensor of a device, signals corresponding to a touch or proximity input within a touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor. The touch or proximity input results in part from interaction of a stylus with the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor and at in part from interaction of a portion of a human hand with the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor. The method also includes differentiating, based on the signals, the interaction of the stylus from the interaction of the portion of the human hand; associating a combination of the interaction of the stylus and the interaction of the portion of the human hand with a pre-determined function of the device; and initiating the pre-determined function associated with the interaction of the stylus and the interaction of the portion of the human hand.

Claims (34)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving, from a touch sensor of a device, signals corresponding to a touch or proximity input within a touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor, the touch or proximity input resulting at least in part from interaction of a stylus with the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor and at least in part from interaction of at least a portion of a human hand with the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor;

differentiating, based on the signals, the interaction of the stylus from the interaction of the portion of the human hand;

associating a combination of the interaction of the stylus and the interaction of the portion of the human hand with a pre-determined function of the device; and

initiating the pre-determined function associated with the interaction of the stylus and the interaction of the portion of the human hand.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of a human hand comprises a finger and the stylus is configured to transmit signals wirelessly to the device through the touch-sensor of the device.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the associating step comprises associating a substantially simultaneous interaction of the finger and the stylus with the pre-determined function.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the pre-determined function associated with the substantially simultaneous interaction of the finger and the stylus is a zooming in, zooming out, or rotation function.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the associating step comprises associating interaction of two fingers and the stylus with the pre-determined function.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of pre-determined functions associated with the interaction with two fingers and the stylus comprises zooming into a text area displayed on a display and performing a writing function in the text area with the stylus.

The method of claim 2 , wherein differentiating the interaction of the stylus from the interaction of the portion of the human hand is through sensing modulation of a drive signal by signals of the stylus, differentiating based on an amplitude and area of the input, or sensing signals from the stylus without application of the drive signal.

8 . A computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying logic configured when executed to:

receive, from a touch sensor of a device, signals corresponding to a touch or proximity input within a touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor, the touch or proximity input resulting at least in part from interaction of a stylus with the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor and at least in part from interaction of at least a portion of a human hand with the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor;

differentiate, based on the signals, the interaction of the stylus from the interaction of the portion of the human hand;

associate a combination of the interaction of the stylus and the interaction of the portion of the human hand with a pre-determined function of the device; and

initiate the pre-determined function associated with the interaction of the stylus and the interaction of the portion of the human hand.

9 . The media of claim 8 , wherein the portion of a human hand comprises a finger and the stylus is configured to transmit signals wirelessly to the device through the touch-sensor of the device.

10 . The media of claim 9 , wherein the logic is further configured to associate a substantially simultaneous interaction of the finger and the stylus with the pre-determined function.

11 . The media of claim 10 , wherein the pre-determined function associated with the substantially simultaneous interaction of the finger and the stylus is a zooming in, zooming out, or rotation function.

12 . The media of claim 9 , wherein the logic is further configured to associate interaction of two fingers and the stylus with the pre-determined function.

13 . The media of claim 12 , wherein the pre-determined function associated with the interaction with two fingers and the active stylus comprises zooming into a text area displayed on a display and performing a writing function in the text area with the stylus.

14 . The media of claim 9 , wherein differentiating the interaction of the active stylus from the interaction of the portion of the human hand is through one of sensing modulation of a drive signal by signals of the stylus, differentiating based on an amplitude and size of the input, or sensing signals of the stylus without application of the drive signal.

15 . A device comprising:

a touch sensor having a touch-sensitive area; and

a computer-readable non-transitory storage media coupled to the touch sensor and embodying logic configured when executed to:

receive, from the touch sensor, signals corresponding to a touch or proximity input within the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor, the touch or proximity input resulting at least in part from interaction of a stylus with the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor and at least in part from interaction of at least a portion of a human hand with the touch-sensitive area of the touch sensor;

differentiate, based on the signals, the interaction of the stylus from the interaction of the portion of the human hand;

associate a combination of the interaction of the stylus and the interaction of the portion of the human hand with a pre-determined function of the device; and

initiate the pre-determined function associated with the interaction of the stylus and the interaction of the portion of the human hand.

16 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the portion of a human hand comprises a finger and the stylus is configured to transmit signals wirelessly to the device through the touch-sensor of the device.

17 . The device of claim 16 , wherein the logic is further configured to associate a substantially simultaneous interaction with the finger and the stylus with the pre-determined function.

18 . The device of claim 17 , wherein the pre-determined function associated with the substantially simultaneous interaction with the finger and the stylus is a zooming in, zooming out, or rotation function.

19 . The device of claim 16 , wherein the logic is further configured to associate interaction with two fingers and the active stylus with the pre-determined function.

20 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the pre-determined function associated with the interaction with two fingers and the stylus comprises zooming into a text area displayed on a display and performing a writing function in the text area with the stylus.
