Abstract

A battery module includes a plurality of battery cells, and at least one barrier adjoining at least one of the battery cells. The barrier includes a plurality of linear members extending in a crosswise direction across the barrier, and a set of the linear members defining a sloping open area in the form of a passage that widens toward one lateral edge of the barrier.

Claims (35)

1. A battery module, comprising:

a plurality of battery cells; and

at least one barrier adjoining at least one of the battery cells, the barrier including:

a plurality of linear members extending in a crosswise direction across the barrier,

a set of the linear members defining a sloping open area in the form of a passage that widens toward one lateral edge of the barrier, and

a plurality of sidewalls adjoining at least one of the battery cells, one of the plurality of sidewalls defining the one lateral edge of the barrier,

wherein:

the one of the plurality of sidewalls includes a main aperture therein providing communication between the sloping open area and an exterior of the barrier,

other sets of the linear members define other open areas extending in the crosswise direction across the barrier, and

the one of the plurality of sidewalls includes a plurality of secondary apertures providing communication between the other open areas and the exterior of the barrier, an area of the main aperture being greater than areas of the secondary apertures.

2. The battery module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the sloping open area narrows toward a center of the sloping open area such that the sloping open area opens from a concentrated passage to form the passage that widens toward the one lateral edge of the barrier.

3. The battery module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the sloping open area has varying distances between the set of the linear members such that distances between the set of the linear members increase as the passage widens toward the one lateral edge of the barrier.

4. The battery module as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the distances between the set of the linear members gradually decrease inwardly away from the one lateral edge of the barrier.

5. The battery module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the sloping open area defined by the set of the linear members includes a first wide region that widens toward the one lateral edge of the barrier, a second wide region that widens toward another lateral edge of the barrier, and a narrow region between the first wide region and the second wide region.

6. The battery module as claimed in claim 5 , wherein, in the first wide region distances between the set of the linear members increase toward the one lateral edge of the barrier, in the second wide region distances between the set of the linear members increase toward the other lateral edge of the barrier, and in the narrow region a distance between the set of the linear members is constant.

7. The battery module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the sloping open area defined by the set of the linear members includes a first wide region that widens toward the one lateral edge of the barrier and a narrow region at another lateral edge of the barrier.

8. The battery module as claimed in claim 7 , wherein, in the first wide region distances between the set of the linear members increase toward the one lateral edge of the barrier and in the narrow region a distance between the set of the linear members is constant.

9. The battery module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the sloping open area defined by the set of the linear members narrows toward another lateral edge of the barrier.

10. The battery module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells and the at least one barrier are alternately arranged along a first direction, the first direction intersecting the crosswise direction of the linear members.

11. The battery module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of battery cells and the at least one barrier are alternately arranged along a first direction, and

the plurality of sidewalls extend between a pair of the plurality of battery cells in the first direction.

12. The battery module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of battery cells and the at least one barrier are alternately arranged along a first direction, and

the plurality of sidewalls extend toward only one of the plurality of battery cells in the first direction.

13. A battery module, comprising:

a plurality of battery cells; and

at least one barrier, the barrier being between adjacent battery cells of the plurality of battery cells and including a plurality of linear members extending in a crosswise direction across the barrier,

a set of the linear members defining a first passageway and a second passageway connected to the first passageway, the second passageway being narrower than the first passageway such that flow between the set of the linear members is concentrated in the second passageway.

14. The battery module as claimed in claim 13 , wherein:

the first passageway widens toward one lateral edge of the barrier, and

the set of the linear members defines a third passageway connected to the second passageway, the second passageway being between the first and third passageways, and

the third passageway widening toward another lateral edge of the barrier.

15. The battery module as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the first passageway widens toward one lateral edge of the barrier and the second passageway is at another lateral edge of the barrier.

16. The battery module as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the first passageway widens toward one lateral edge of the barrier and the second passageway is at a center of the barrier.
